The Port Oliver Yacht Club held its commissioning day on April 26th to declare the start of the 2008 sailing season. Opening Day commissioning for yacht clubs is a tradition for reopening no longer snow- and ice-bound clubs in the spring and putting hauled boats back into the water — a time for celebration. This (now) largely symbolic gesture means that the yacht club is open for the season. More recently, commissioning has developed into an opportunity to prepare one's boat for sailing and to meet with fellow yacht club members after a long winter. The club’s burgee is hoisted, dignitaries are recognized, the Chaplin says a prayer, toasts are lifted, and masts are raised. This year the POYC will also recognize its founders and former commodores in the POYC Plank Owner’s Park. tentative Schedule: 11:30 pm Introductory Remarks12:00 Blessing of the fleet 12:50 Plank Park ceremony 1:15 Champagne Reception with hors d’oeuvres |
