Frequently Asked Questions about Rainbow Bay Marina

Rainbow Bay Marina is operated by the Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department at Pearl Harbor Naval Station. It offers a variety of facilities for boat owners as well as lessons and rentals. For the most accurate and up to date information, contact the marina. Some frequently asked questions:

  • What type of facilities are available?

Rainbow Bay Marina has both wet and dry slips for sail and power boats. There are 136 wet slips and 65 dry slips.  The maximum size boat that can accommodated is 47' length and 15' beam. Rainbow Bay Marina also offers fuel and water, but no repair facilities. Boat access to Rainbow Bay Marina must be coordinated through Pearl Harbor Naval Station. There are no gates or restriction on car or pedestrian access, though the docks for privately-owned boats in the wet-slips have locked gates where the dock meets the shore.

  • Who can rent slips?

Slips may be rented by active-duty military, retired military or any other personnel currently affiliated with the Department of Defense.

To rent a slip, you must sign up in person at the Rainbow Bay Marina office. All slips are currently full and there is a waiting list for new slips.  The priority for assigning new slips is:

    1. Active duty Navy personnel
    2. Active duty personnel of all other services
    3. Retired and reserve military personnel
    4. All other authorized patrons

The cost for a slip is $4.50 per foot per month.  Waiting time currently ranges from 1-2 years, depending on your priority status and slip availability.  Note that there are more smaller slips than larger slips, so the waiting time for a smaller boat is generally shorter.

  • Can I live aboard my boat?

Yes, but it requires a lot of patience and advance planning. First, you'll have to get a slip at Rainbow Bay Marina (see above).  After you've gotten a slip, you can go on the waiting list for a live-aboard billet.  Currently only 10% of the slips are permitted to have live-aboards, which means only 13 boats can be live-aboards. There is currently a 2+ year wait for live-aboard billets, though this depends on your waiting list priority (same as above) and the turnover in live-aboard billets. Cost for a live-aboard slip is $9 per foot per month for your boat.

  • Are there any sailing classes or lessons?

Yes. Rainbow Bay Marina offers classes to authorized personnel (i.e. active duty, reserve, retired military or otherwise currently affiliated with DoD).
