US Sailing issued Basic Keelboat Certification. Requires completion of both the Basic and Advanced courses. Includes certification fee and a one-year membership to US Sailing, the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing. This 4-hour capstone course consists of an on board examination and a two part written examination. Upon successful completion of the Basic Keelboat certification course the program boats will be offered for weekend day charter to further build up the sailing experience of the sailors.
Learn to sail at any level of experience and become certified
We offer courses at all levels of experience from Basic to Advanced and even a 2-hour mini course for a fun introduction to sailing. There is no prerequisite for the Mini or Basic Keelboat courses. Our instruction will give you the confidence and ability to responsively skipper or crew a simple day-sailing keelboat. After learning the basics; our advanced courses will give you the skills need to be a skilled and experienced sailor, including helping you earn your sailing certification.
Learn to sail without owning a boat
All equipment and course materials are provided. All of our courses are conducted on a fleet of 18’ day-sailing sloop-rigged keelboats with tiller steering. A portion of our fleet wheelchair accessible.

Mini Introduction Course:
Introduction to Sailing. The 2 hour on-water session provides students with an overview of sailing as well as a preview of our other course offerings. Under the guidance of a qualified instructor, feel the wind in your hair and mist on your face as you experience the excitement of sailing.
Basic Course:
Basic Keelboat Instruction. Includes the US Sailing certification series training book “Basic Keelboat”. The three day course consists of morning classroom time followed by afternoon on-water sessions covering sailing concepts, sailing preparations, sailing upwind, down wind and tacking. The Basic Keelboat course will prepare the sailors for boat ownership and provide them with the documentation to allow them to charter a tiller steered keelboat of 18’ to 27’ from most domestic or international charter companies.
Advanced Course:
Advanced keelboat training. Includes membership in the Kennedy Point Yacht Club. The three day course consists of morning classroom time followed by afternoon on-water sessions covering the sailing environment, weather, tides, basic navigation rules, overboard rescue methods, shortening sail, anchoring, outboard motor operation and safety equipment.
