Heather Skubin made a cameo appearance at the Chili Cook-off. She was still incubating at that time. Her due date is Tuesday, 9/11. We are all looking forward to meeting the youngest member of the club!!!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Bob Selig also showed up at the Chili Cook-off and won a door prize. I am not sure but it might have been a Lavender Foot Massage. Way to go Bob!!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
We were all disappointed that Wes Beadle was too sick to enter the Chili Cook-off. There is no truth to the rumor that he got sick on his own chili!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Tish Jaynes is off to Charleston, SC on 9/10. Jay will stay behind to sell the town home and put some items in order. He is open to dinner invitations any night!!

Mike Vining is flying off to Bremerton, WA on 9/12 to start his final tour on the aircraft carrier, Stennis. Doreen is open to dinner invitations any night!!

You can visit Sue in her padded cell at Tripler most days between 2:00 and 4:00. We hope she recovers soon from the stress of the Chili Cook-off…

Many thanks to the Chocolate Elf (Rep) for doling out the Ghirardelli bars throughout the day; it was quite the treat…

Are Seamarog and Flying Fish the next boats you’ll see in the Ditty Bag? Seems Dan & Kim may have been bitten by the “bigger boat ittus” bug, something about a cruiser…and rumor has it Cookie thinks they need at least a 30 footer, the Fish is just too small…look out folks seems the BBI bug is getting around…

Did you notice that new full size White Chevy outside the gate, seems BoB Benson has traded up…and now he’s trying to sell the Mercedes if anyone is interested, see BoB…

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

Louis officially has the conn now as your Commodore so sadly, this is my last article for a while. I've witnessed a terrific year for the club so far. Our membership as a whole is really stepping up and working together, from sailing and fishing events to the annual open house, and throughout it all you have managed to keep the place shipshape.  For those of you that actively took part in the planning and execution of the open house/Chili Cook-off event, my hat is off to you. It was by far the best yet. Mahalo to Sue Fuller and Louis Rogers, you can chair it again anytime.  As a result of all the members doing such a fine job of coordinating their respective parts, I felt like just an extra body wandering around during the event. I can't begin to tell you the number of compliments I received for the club and members hospitality; I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. You do have a lot to be proud of as the biggest club in these islands.  There is no news yet on the long term lease. I believe we have had a few visitors coming in to take a look around but, so far no new news is good as we don't expect any word until December.

Again, I'm really honored to have served as your Commodore, take care of

each other while I'm away. I look forward to swapping sea stories each chance I get to return.

Seeyaonthewater,

Mike

Aloha All,

It's True, Mike has gone and left me with some big shoes to fill.  By this, I mean he's done so much as a leader it'll be hard to replace his leadership.  That being the case, because of his professionalism and act of chivalry, pertaining to negotiations with the present landlord and the Navy, these talks have usually ended in our favor.  Under Mike's tenure, our organization has been visible at many sailing events, Opening Day, TransPac, X-MAS light Parade, SEAFEST, as well as many other island wide yacht club functions.  And, with your continued support and guidance I'll try to continue in the example that everyone has come to know as Iroquois' trademark. And that is, being there when needed and giving 100%.

On a more jubilant note, I'd like to thank everyone that volunteered and participated in the greatest "Chili Cook-Off Ever".  At last, we can honestly say it was the greatest this century.  And that's only because of each and every one of you and your dedication.  Without your hard work we would have just had another annual Chili Cook-Off.  You have showed what Iroquois is all about, a beacon of light that shines and guides this community in the direction of good fellowship, camaraderie and safe boating practices.  Our entire organization is filled with exceptional leadership, and I would especially like to give a big Mahalo to Sue Fuller.  Sue coordinated all operations of the preparations and planning for the event.  Without her dedication and hard work we would not even have had a goal to reach.  Again, Mahalo to you Sue.  A job well done.   That does not mean that I do not recognize any one else's efforts, you know who you are, and I really truly appreciate your generosity also.

Speaking of Participation, I attended the SEAFEST planning meeting on 5 Sept.  This year’s SEAFEST is being hosted by the Waikiki Yacht Club to be held on 3 Nov 2007.  This is a fundraising event and the intent is to make money, unlike our Chili Cook-Off.  The objective this year is to raise between $16,000 and $20,000.  Tickets for adults, $15.00 (include lunch), children ages 10-18 years, $10.00 and children under 10 years free.  There will be a silent auction with a web component along with the live auction on site.  As usual, I'm responsible for the dunk tank.  You can check out other events on the web site.

Aloha All

Apologize for the slow posting of the August offshore race results but here they are at long last:

    1’st Moonrunner

    2’nd Puff

    3’rd Joy Anna

It seems that the US Air Force failed to contact the ILYC RC for Sail when they scheduled the Waikiki Air Show for 15 Sep, so in honor of my AF brethren the 15 September inshore race has been rescheduled for Sunday 16 September, 1100 Skippers Meeting, 1200 start as normal.

The Holo Holo Around Oahu race will be held 22-23 September and Jacare’ is out for this year's race so we are looking for an alternate boat to represent ILYC. If you're interested in entering your boat let me know and we'll try to round up a crack crew.

Colette had a good run to Pokai Bay over Labor Day, Nearly had the bay to ourselves- only one other boat from Waikiki was there, plenty of dolphins, bar-b-que, and cold beverages were had by all.

See you round the club.

The next fishing tournament will be November 17th.  I know the 17th is an off-shore sail boat race but, sail boaters can participate in their own category.

At the next general meeting, let's discuss who would be interested in boating down to Waikiki Yacht Club and going out to dinner. I have also heard some folks are interested in a SCUBA trip.  Please contact me if you would like to discuss either of these POWER BOAT events.

Aloha,

Once again, our little corner of paradise is full and our Active Duty (AD) percentage is around 40%!  That means that some retirees/civilians may get kicked out to a ball if AD folks come looking for slips.  I'll try to minimize that as much as possible by sending boats without current permits out first.  Just be aware that the slip situation is getting tight.

Speaking of permits--Puff and The Office will expire in September.  Please get an extra copy of the permit when you renew.

Thanks,

Tony Snodgrass

Okay I’m on my soapbox.  Three years ago in February the club voted not to implement specific smoking or non-smoking rules.  It was determined that we were all adults and could come to an amicable solution.  For those three years I’ve tried to gently remind smokers that many of us don’t want to smell their cigarette smoke while we eat or sit and relax, I’ve even tried moving away from the smokers so as to not disturb them with my non-smoking clean air (okay sometimes I could use a shower, but in that we are all guilty at times, especially those of you that participate in work days).  But September’s meeting night for me was the final straw.  I politely tried to ask one of our smokers if he would refrain from smoking at the table I was sitting at (and had been sitting at for some time, while he had just walked into the club) and not only did he ignore me and light up a cigarette he ended up blowing smoke in my face (now I’m sure he didn’t do that on purpose…well I think he didn’t anyway) but for me that was the last straw.  I have prepared a new club smoking policy that the membership can vote in or out, to determine how we want to handle smoking at our club.  As far as I am concerned I can no longer use the club facilities as is, we either have to have a smoking area, or a smoke free non-smoking area…or I guess I could go find somewhere else to keep my boat.  I don’t believe I’m alone in these thoughts and issues in regards to smoking and smokers, I think this will benefit many that are not quite vocal or as obnoxious as I am more than willing to be.  Since it is one of our club rules that new policies must be posted in the club newsletter prior to being voted on, please see the attachment to this newsletter and attend next month’s (October) meeting to vote on this issue (and many others I’m sure).

Aloha, "well done" is all I can say for the Chili Cook-Off. It was a great time. Thanks to all of you (Monte, Kate, Kim, to name a few) that helped in the food service arena. There were many others and I'm sorry for not listing all, but your help was truly appreciated, you did an outstanding job and I believe we served the club well. The next party scheduled is the ILYC Halloween party. Once again this is an adult party, a couple of days early so that parents will be able to take the kids out "Trick or treating". It's a costume party, so put your inhibitions aside and have some fun. There will be a Prize for "Best Costume" based on originality and preparation. Thanks again for your support and I look forward to seeing you all around the club.

Aloha

Staff Commodore

I recently returned from disaster duty in Texas with the Small Business Administration, Office of Disaster Assistance. Flooding had occurred in several areas of the state causing major property damage. I worked in Wichita Falls where the floodwaters hit residential areas at 3 AM with little warning. Fortunately there were few casualties but there was massive property damage.

Think about if your house and most of your possessions were gone in a matter of minutes. With that in mind, hurricane season is in full swing here with the highest number occurring historically this month. How many of us were ready when Flossie went by? Had it not been for some strong trades she could have headed our way!

For those who need VE’s, we will be available as always when workday pau. Roger Stone and I are now the only VE’s available. At any other time if you see us around the club you can get it done then. Please have your current paperwork available.  Remember, get it done now and don’t panic when it’s time to visit Pass & ID to renew your permit.

I know CCO is over but there are two major happenings involving ILYC for the rest of the year. That would be determining fees and dues for 2008 and election of officers for 2008. It is in the best interests of all members to actively participate in these events. Remember, “no vote, no grumble.”  So please make an effort to be at the club general membership meetings for the next two months and especially to vote at our December elections meeting.
