Chandlery End of Summer Inventory SALE Friday August 25th thru Friday Sept 8th

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

It's been a busy August, no more mangroves, preparations for our Chili cook-off and making the club ready for fencing and paving. It's time for ILYC laborers to relax a bit, is anyone up for a cruise to Pokai Bay this weekend? Chili cook-off tickets are available for you if you haven't picked up yours come and get them.

Many Mahalos to all of you that are taking pride in your club and have jumped in to help regardless of the day of the week or with no guarantee of a work chit. Lot's of quick reaction drills at the club lately to include; shed moving, sprinkler extraction, moving racks of stuff and even moving the flag pole, by the way, it really looks great in it's new location. But don't fret, there is still quite a bit of lawn care, cleaning and organizing to be accomplished before we are ready to open the gates for the Chili cook-off on the 9th, Mahalo in advance for pitching in. I've witnessed a great number of you routinely helping to keep the place ship shape - It's ILYC Ohana working together, it's what we have done so well for such a long time. Paid staff? who needs 'em.

We are still standing by for the fencing and paving project and you can count on a period of inconvenience in regard to parking, so bear with it once it starts - plan to park on the other side of the street. The paving work will most likely not start until after the chili cook-off and yes, the fence will extend out over the water.  I expect this work will be accomplished in several phases, so keep an eye out and be mindful of the club's property, yours and others.

The annual Labor Day trip to Pokai hasn't gotten much press and Labor Day weekend is coming up fast. Pokai is a terrific place to sail to and from, especially when you can sail along with ILYC members if it's your first overnighter. There will be a sign up on the board at the club so consider taking a break and going down for a Friday sunset cruise and returning Sunday. That is unless you have a fast power boat; I prefer coming back Sunday so there is still a whole day off to tell sea stories before work on Tuesday.

If you have not picked up your tickets for the Chili Cook Off see a board member, 10 tickets maximum - please take only what you need.

See ya on the water,

Mike

Vice Commodore

Louis Rogers

Aloha to all ILYC members,

Now hear this!!  There is a Chili Cook-Off coming to town!  That's right, the fliers are out and the whole town is talking about it.  There's no stopping it now, come one come all, bring your family, friends and neighbors!  The big event is going to take place as you know on Saturday September 9, 2006.  However, on Friday September 8, is the time to setup the canopies and do the shopping for the food and beverages.   For those of you that would like to volunteer your support, please use the white board at the club to sign up or call me at 689-8202 and leave a message or e-mail me at http://by108fd.bay108.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?mailto=1&msg=39CD1AA2-C3A0-4DBC-BBE3-ED3A6FC0100E&start=0&len=13544&src=&type=x&to=louisrogers@hawaii.rr.com&cc=&bcc=&subject=&body=&curmbox=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&a=524a3e0bd2fcc3cb4c19e71b25cee18a768a06487cd88ea6925986bec1684e8d .  I'm asking for a special meeting on Wednesday September 6,  at 1800 to go over the assignments and responsibilities of the volunteers.

Some areas of concern are: grilling, food preparation, bar assistant, trash collection, scrip sales, jumper, boat races, and electrical outlets.  Other concerns are equipment such as, tables and chairs that have to be transported as well as an inflatable jumper.  I'm looking forward to the CCO and I know that with your support and commitment we can make this a great event.  We can do it!  Thanks to all that have signed up to help with the preparations for and volunteering  your support in this years Chili Cook-Off.  This is our chance to impress the community and other visitors as to the hard work and the dedication that we are committed to and continually strive to achieve year after year.

RC for Sail

Tony Snodgrass

It can’t be September already—but it is and that means it’s time for the Chili Cook-off!  We’re going to have a special sailing treat for this year’s festivities.  The 14’ Widgeons will be used for a double elimination sailing tournament and there will be two beautiful trophies for the winner and the runner-up.  Put your two man teams together and next weekend we’ll be tweaking the Widgeons up and getting them into race ready condition.

This month we finally pulled off an inbound and an outbound race with four boats each.  The inbound race finished with Puff, Jacaré, Moonrunner, and Coconut Rhumb.  While the outbound race finished with Jacaré, Puff, Wailana, and Sun Tui (these are unofficial results—I still have to get the handicap for Wailana).  This means Puff carries a small lead in all categories as we move into the final months of the racing year.  I would like to extend a special racing welcome to Brian and Heather Skubin who made their racing debut with Wailana.

For the month of September, we’re scheduled for an inbound race on the 16th and an outbound race on the 23rd. We’ll have to talk about this at the meeting next week. With the Chili Cook-off going on—this may prove to be a little too ambitious for some of our racing fleet.

I’ll see you around our little corner of paradise!

Tony

Aloha to All;

As you know, the really big chili cook-off is just around the corner and Louis is getting down to the wire.  Anyone that can pitch in and help will be greatly appreciated.  I am sure that this one will be the best ever and fun WILL be had by all.  AND NOW....POWER........Ok all you speed demons and you too sails, new month coming up so we may get yet another fishing tourney done.  Would be toward the end of September so we all have enough time to save up for the gas ;-}  I'll let you all know at the general meeting and, with the great help of my good buddy Al, by email the following weekend.  Really depends on participation so we'll see how it goes.  Anyway, everyone stay safe and dry and push the chili cook-off as much as possible.  Take care.

Chili cook-off is happening, come on down and enjoy your club.

September is also the month when I send out the fourth quarter mooring bills.  Please remember that I cannot accept work chits when payment is made after the deadline date of 16 October.  So plan ahead, maybe take all of Willy's money in Texas Hold-em.

Secretary

Allan (sea story) Cameron

It’s that time of year, it’s time for the annual Chili Cook-Off at ILYC.  If you’ve not yet signed up with our Vice Commodore, Louis Rogers for an assignment helping sell, cook, clean, set-up or tear down at the CCO, it’s still not too late.  This is an “all hands on deck” type of event, we need max participation from as many members as we can get to help make this event happen.  I for one enjoy working part of the CCO and just watching the fun and antics of my fellow boaters the rest of the day.  There will be events for the kids, activities, food and beverages for all ages, and don’t forget, chili to be made and judged.  If you want to read up on the rules of the actual CCO, just slip on over to your club web site http://www.ussailing.net/ILYC/ and check out all the rules on-line.  Please invite your friends, your family, your co-workers and especially anyone you know that is thinking about buying a boat, or looking for a fun place to hang out with crazy boaters (that would us here at ILYC).

Congratulations to members Tom and Debra Harvey on delivery of your “new” boat Incomunicado.  For those of you that don’t know Tom and Deb they joined the club a couple of years back with a Catalina 22.  Tom got bit hard by the bigger boatitus bug and spent some six months traveling back and forth to the mainland looking for that perfect boat.  Finally his brother found an add on a bulletin board and now Tom and Deb have found themselves Incommunicado, a Catalina 42 that Tom just couldn’t live without.  He and his brother have spent August avoiding hurricanes in the eastern Pacific delivering the boat from California to Ko Olina in only 16 days (unfortunately the mast is too tall to fit under the wire here at Iroquois Lagoon).  This was Tom’s first TRANSPAC crossing, so again I wish to extend my hearty congratulations on a job well done…

And speaking of congratulations, a hearty congrats and well done to the ILYC “pick-up” crew on Jacare’ in this year’s Kauai Channel Race.  They braved 30-40 knot winds and some serious waves racing over to and sailing back from Kauai.  For many of the crew this was their first off shore sailing event, and what an event it was.  Jacare’ again proved her mettle with only some very minor gear failures.  Again, well done to all.

Port Captain

Tim DuBois

It's been a quiet month on the Port Captain front. The marina is nearly full with only a few slips still open, the east dock is holding it's on for now, chili cookoff is here, LIFE IS GOOD. I expect several Waikiki boats will want to visit ILYC this Chili Cookoff and if you are willing to move out to a ball for a few days and make room for a guest please let me know. I will look at the number of boats coming in and if needed move boats out to the balls.

Director of Activities

Willy Bethea

Wow another great month at the best Yacht Club on the island.

Last month for activities we had a couple pot lucks after the sail boat races and also took care of the work crew with some subs from subway. September I will be dedicating most of my efforts on assisting with the Chili Cook off. If you have the time we need help on the day before the cook off as well as the day after so please spare some of your valuable time and give us a hand.

As activities I don’t always have to dictate what the event has to be. If you know of something coming up that you think the club should get involved in let me know. We don’t always have to eat drink and be merry; well the merry part I think is pretty important. I think you know what I mean. RC for power has suggested a fish fry after a fishing tournament in the up and coming months.

So far I think one of the activities I have been pretty consistent at is donating my money to our Saturday poker nights. If you’re looking for something to do come on down or give us a call at the club and see if we’re playing,  you won’t get sent to the poor house and it is a lot of fun.

Till next month, fair winds and following seas.                   Willy Bethea

Staff Commodore

Tom Youngblood

Great race to Kauai. ILYC well represented by a great boat and skipper with a semi green crew who became somewhat greener at times. If you have been around the club at all you have most likely heard some of the stories. If not you may be in a coma.  Nawiliwili YC treated us very well and we hope to see at least one or two of them at our chili cook off. They are also a self help club and have the State as a landlord. I think we are lucky in that regard.

Chili Cook-off.: Best way to get a good crowd is invite your friends, even they may not be boaters, to visit and compete.

Looking to improve your boating skills and knowledge, have some fun along with providing a service to the community? Maybe the US Coast Guard Auxiliary is for you. We are looking for a few good ILYC people to join Flotilla 16. Now is your chance to join the exclusive group of Roger, Mike and Tom. More to follow after CCO.
