Aloha,

Happy Turkey month.  I encourage you to stand up and be elected and serve your fellow club members; ILYC was represented in some competitive October sailing, and you really should plan to participate in the boat parade, it's great fun.

I encourage all of you to consider taking a position on the board of directors, it's not really too time consuming and getting some different folks involved will provide some new energy and a fresh approach. The election meeting will be on a Saturday in December so plan to attend.  In addition to the slate provided by the election committee, we'll take nominations from the floor.  As usual, bribes are almost always considered acceptable practice. It’s lots of fun for a couple of hours on a Saturday so plan to attend.

Lipton Cup was lots of fun and you were well represented, Alex and I did not bring back the cup, but we did enjoy some great sailing in K-bay in Cal-20's with some Olympian sailors. It's always lots of fun learning a new boat as we sail with the best of the best.

Tony and I enjoyed some sailing 'round the island, as part of the annual Holoholo and were just rounding Makapua while you all were shaking in your shoes.  Fortunately, a tsunami wasn't created and included as part of the fun that morning, the wind and rain alone were enough for me.

HYC is having their annual boat parade on 9 December, the first judging is at 1730 in front of the HYC club, then it's off to Aloha tower to show your stuff. Last year there were over 30 boats, it was a great show to see from the water. There will be a buffet afterwards and the proceeds go to Harbor House, providing meals to needy families.  This year "An Elvis Christmas" is the theme, so break out those jumpsuits and lights and plan to participate.  For more information call Barbara Silvey 926-0250.

Well it's been a great run this year, what with a new pier, roof on the club house, and the fencing and paving should be complete by years end as well.  Thanks for all your support throughout this year.

 seeyouonthewater,

 Mike

Vice Commodore

Louis Rogers

  Aloha, to all members,

Another month has passed and this year is counting down.  However, don't count yourself out yet!  There's still a lot of exciting events remaining before we cheer in the New Year.  For example, don't forget the annual Hawaii Youth Sailing Association (HYSA) Seafeast/fund raising; to be held at The Kaneohe Yacht Club on Saturday, November 11th, from 10 am till 3 pm.  Plan on a day of fun on the other side while you meet other boaters, represent Iroquois Lagoon and most of all know that your time and energy will have helped a good and worthwhile cause.

On another note, election time is here for the new board members.  If you have some good ideals that may further increase our club's ability to reach our collective goals, don't hold back, come forward and nominate yourself or nominate that person you know to be a good leader with an open mind and passionate heart.  However, whatever you decide, just be present to vote.  Mahalo, see you at the club.

Louis

RC for Sail

Tony Snodgrass

We didn't pull off any club races this month--but ILYC was well represented at key events.  Mike and I entered the Holoholo (around Oahu) race under the special category of double handed vessels.  We placed second in that division and 5th overall.  Also, Mike and Alex raced in the Lipton One-Design Challenge at Kaneohe Yacht Club.  They came in fifth overall and got a 2nd place in the first race--this race had Olympic and National champions as competitors.  Great work and a good showing for the club!

This month is the last of our racing season.  With only a few points separating several competing boats, the Inshore race on the 11th and the Offshore on the 18th will decide the winners of the great prizes in December.

Finally, this month the nominating committee will present new people for the board.  If you want to be the RC for Sail next year or any other officer, please let this committee know so they can put you on the ballot and improve our little corner of paradise.

The good news is that we continue to get new members joining our club every month.  Keep up the good work everyone, if you know of anyone that has an interest in boating, or just hanging out with crazy boat owners, please bring them on down to the club and show them around (of course remember to sign them into the guest book).

November is a month of distinction for ILYC, first at the General Membership meeting we will vote on the dues and fees we will charge ourselves for next year.  I’m sure Charlie will speak to me about letting the cat out of the bag, but now is the time to speak up, if you don’t like the fees we are charging, if you think we should be charging more so we can build better piers, a new storage building or even a bigger and better clubhouse, or for some reason you think we should be charging less (which is just silly).  Now is the time to let your voice be heard.

Also this month the nominating committee is putting together a list of candidates for next year’s Board of Directors.  Every position on the Board is up for grabs every year.  None of us have a lock on any position on the Board, and there are no prerequisites for serving in any capacity on the Board.  So if you are interested talk to Roger, Beth, Lori, Marcus and or Tom Youngblood.

And this month is the end of the sailing race season; there are no races in December.  I know it is silly, I don’t know why we don’t race every week of the year but some members seems to think they need time away from sailboat racing.  That is just crazy talk as far as I’m concerned.  But anyway, come on down to the club this month and join in on the races, either as skipper of your own boat, or there is always room for crew on someone else’s boat.

Speaking of crew, I want to thank Tim for crewing on Puff this last Saturday.  Only Jacare and Puff we showed up for the race, and we decided to go out and have a fun day of cruising on the water instead of racing.  Both boats left together and sailed on down to Diamond Head.  After Tony lost part of his crew overboard (they jumped in for a swim when the boats got in the lee of Diamond Head), we both headed back to Pearl.  In keeping with the twinsee theme of the day, both boats hoisted asymmetric spinnakers and we had a great chute ride back to the channel.  For Lori and I this was our fist sail since August due to ill health, first Lori then me trading off feeling bad for all of September and the first half of October.  But Saturday almost made up for it all in one fell swoop.  And Snoopy was dancing out in front of Puff…thanks Tim.

Aloha All

For those of you worried about who was at the top of the retired list (and possibly bumped out of a slip) you can breathe a little easier, there are now a couple of empty slips and no one is in imminent danger of being bumped. Next workday I am hoping to put some rain covers over the power outlets on the new pier, hopefully that will solve the problem with the GFCI breakers tripping in the rain. We will also continue to do patch work on the old pier.

With the club election day getting close I would like to officially say I will not be running for Port Captain next year, it is a great position that offers a FREE slip!! If you have ever thought about becoming a club officer now is the time. All you have to do is let one of the election committee officials know you’re interested and they will put your name in the hat for next years Port Captain.

Overall pretty quiet on the PC front, see you at workday!

Director of Activities

Up and coming activities: Work day, sail boat races, fishing derbies, Christmas and the elections. Speaking of elections, the activities spot will be available next year.  I would love to continue on but as with a lot of active duty people, I will be moving on to other things next year.  The activities position is very rewarding and can be a lot of fun.

Looking ahead, the Christmas party this year will be ran the same as last year. At our next board meeting we’ll try and pin down a date. It will be an Adult only party and a gift exchange, why is it called a white elephant? Where did a name like that come from?  We’ll have a potluck prime rib dinner with the club supplying the meat and potatoes as usual so stay tuned.

Staff Commodore

Tom Youngblood

Time to think about two important club events coming up. At the November meeting we vote on next years fees. If you can’t attend at least provide input to a board member. To borrow a phrase”, no vote, no grumble.” I recommend you attend and be part of it if at all possible. It’s your $. Second event is nominations for 2007 board of directors. Get involved!  The nominating committee will be contacting the membership soon.

UH football team has a very good and exciting team this year.  Consider going to Rainbow by boat, get a guest slip, and tailgate at the pier/boat. Then a short walk to the game. No hassle parking a car or driving home. If you prefer, you can drive to Rainbow. On game day they allow only military affiliated to park there. If interested, talk to me or Mike for details. Good fun eh!

  US Coast Guard Auxiliary news:

Flotilla 16 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary is still looking for ILYC members to train as crew, coxswain or vessel examiners.

Aloha and thanks to the majority of members who paid their mooring fees on time.  For the few stragglers (you know who you are J) I will be sending out reminders.

Lot of business coming up – Budget at the November meeting and elections in December.  Come on out and support your club.

Mahalo,

Charlie

Rusty's Tips:

Ticks on kids, pets or yourself can be easily removed by applying a cotton ball with a dab of dish soap.  The soap makes it back out, the cotton catches it and you throw it away.

Director of Facilities

Gary Sutton

Sorry for no newsletter input for the past few months,  I am now back on line.  Thanks to everyone for the great help on workdays and for all the support between those scheduled days.  The new fence is just about complete and we are waiting for our locksmith to transfer the original lock to the new gate (the small gate).  The next workday is on Saturday 4 November,  See You There.

Aloha,  Gary

Chandlery

Beth Snodgrass and Lori Cameron

If you missed the Chili Cook-off then you haven't had a chance to check out the newest Iroquois Lagoon t-shirts and tanks.  Due to budget limitations, we were only able to order a limited supply and the tanks were the first to be sold out (yeeaa!).  We still have a few red t-shirts available and quite a few of the new blue and grey t-shirts.  We're currently out of hats but should have some coming in soon.  As money allows, we'll be putting in orders for more polos and more tanks.  The Chandlery also has some beautiful pictures (overhead shots) of the club and lagoon available in a variety of sizes and prices starting @ $4.00.
Let either Lori or I know if there's something you'd like to see in the chandlery.  See you at the club!!
