 Welcome New Members..!!

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

May is here, lighter winds and south side surf will be coming in regular real soon. The interest in fishing is in full swing and there is some serious interest in an inter-island cruise over the long weekend. Look for a signup posting at the club on this voyage.  On a more serious note, if you are sending someone to the club to work on your boat please let the port captain know. We haven't been doing a good job of signing in guest /boat maintainers; more importantly you are responsible for your guests and their actions.  Do the right thing and be there yourself, otherwise make arrangements so the club isn't left in a difficult situation.  There is no staff to police the folks coming and going.

Change 3 to the NAVREG instruction for the use of Pearl Harbor waters has been promulgated. Residents of IIC can obtain an abbreviated permit; to access the channel to and from sea only as far as the lagoon. I don't expect this to change our club /membership, it might help to keep our slips full and more quickly fund the new pier.  Speaking of IIC, our lease is to be renewed in July, I don't expect any significant changes and your board will be looking to include a provision for amortizing the expense of the new east pier we will build.

One saved round, if you haven't heard I decided to take the Navy up on the offer and accept a promotion. If you come by I'll buy you a beverage on Cinco de Mayo, as if you needed another reason to attend.

Vice Commodore

Louis Rogers

Aloha to all members of the ILYC.

We've had a busy and productive past month, with the sailing, fishing, work days and the numerous birthday celebrations.  And on that note, it appears that the month of May will be filled with just as many exciting events and celebrations.  One thing is for sure, and that is the general membership meeting will be as scheduled on the 2nd of May.  By the way, the appearance of the facilities is on an incline and the efforts of everyone that participates in work day projects are apparent and appreciated by everyone. Remember, we can always make use of any talents that you may have, so come on down on this work day and lend a hand or a tool.

P.S., don't forget, September 8th is the "Chili Cook Off". Please plan on volunteering.

Louis Rogers, Vice

RC for Power

Paul Gaydos

The sign up sheet for the May 19th fishing tournament is on the RC for Power bulletin board. The entry fee is still $50 a boat.  So far, only Kona Kai has signed up. (Yes, I finally have a real Power/Fishing boat!)

We do want to encourage our sail boating brethren to participate in our fish tourneys (the more fish the merrier) so we are going to have two categories; one for power boaters and one for sail boaters.

To do this we need a minimum of two boats to enter in each category.  If there is less than that, all the entry money will go into one pool.

We are still looking for your recommendations for folks that work on boats.  Please mark up the “References” sheet on the bulletin board.

RC for Sail

Tim DuBois

Aloha

First off, I would like to welcome Scott and Harla to the racing fleet. Pau Hana was able to pull off a win during her first race at ILYC, way to go Scott!! The next two races will be held on May 12th for the inshore and on May 19th for the offshore and I can't wait. The RC for Sail has a new boat with all of her new toys attached and is ready to get out and play.

I have had several folks respond that they are interested in a Memorial Day boat trip but no one has voted for a particular destination. Two prime candidates are the Needles anchorage on Lanai or Pokai Bay. Needles is a 71 mile one way trek but it could be well worth the extra effort. Pokai Bay is a great spot as well, it is 27 miles if you stay outside of the tanker buoys and many great sailing trips have gone there in the past. But don't think for a minute this is a sail only event, power boats are more than welcome to come along especially if they catch fish. Think about it and bring your vote to the May meeting. Good times are sure to be had by all that go!!!!!!!

Okay this month I mean it, none of the ranting & raving I seem to becoming known for.  This time I’m going to put into action some of my own words.  I keep prattling on and on about a club atmosphere where we share information with each other, so I’m going to share with you some of the web sites I use to both keep up my boat, and keep me entertained about boating.  Granted most of these sites, okay all of these sites, have to do with sailing.  Maybe if you too want to share your web sites, especially someone from the power side of the world, we could put these lists together and work on Tony (our own web site web master) to put us together a links page we could use from the ILYC web page.

Thanks for the on time response from the vast majority of the members who paid their mooring fees on time.  The malingerers know who they are and I won't publish your names until next month's newsletter, please pay your slip fees.

Director of Activities

Larry Rock

Aloha all, last month was not a big month for parties, but was a great month for the activities director and club members. If you haven’t noticed we have a new grill and grilling area. Good riddance to the old grill (it served us well) but it was time to step up to the big leagues. Thanks to all that pitched in (especially our Mason, Pat) that helped make the project happen and to our Port Captain/Facilities director for supplying the funds from their budgets. As the clubs unofficial “Grill-Master” it’s made my job much easier. Next job is to paint the new wall complete with logo. Contact me if you have any good ideas. Next months party is “Cinco de Mayo” on oddly enough 5 May starting @ 1830hrs. There will be many margaritas to drink and “mucho” Mexican food to devour. I haven’t received any recipes yet, so I guess you will get my “Deutsch” version of Mexican food.  Remember there will be a mid-day 1100-1300 gathering for those of you interested in celebrating The Kentucky Derby. The 8th race (derby) usually goes off about 1700hrs CST, that’s 1200hrs HST. Mint Juleps and grill fare will be provided. A workday is also happening for those of you who will be participating, but the usual workday meal will not be provided. Many Mahalo’s for all your support and see you out on the water.

Director of Facilities

Gary Harvell

Thanks to all who worked so hard on the last work day, a lot was accomplished.  The front gate now lights up on entry and the flag pole is lit every night.  Rock should be happy now, he has a new grill and grill area, my budget went out the window.  MAY workday will be 5 May 2007, we have a full list of things to work on.  Your continued support and hard work keep our club looking so fine.  Look forward to seeing you all at the club on May 5th, start time will be 0800.

Staff Commodore

Tom Youngblood

For those who need VE’s we will be available as always when workday pau. Do we only do VE’s on workday? NO, but it’s almost assured that at least one of the ILYC examiners will be there on workday. Other than workday you will have to schedule an appointment.  Remember, get it done now and don’t panic when it’s time to visit Pass & ID to renew your permit.

I recently returned from some training with the Small Business Administration Office of Disaster Assistance.  It looks like a healthy hurricane season is expected, at least for the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Many of us have interests/family in those regions. Hopefully we will be lucky here. However, remember the earthquake in Oct 2006? Remember the power outage? Suppose that relatively minor inconvenience went on for days. What! Warm beer!

I’d like to call attention to Secretary Al’s recent email re: any club member writing an article for The Arrow. Let your voice be heard, your experiences, complaints, concerns, tips, etc. In recent history I don’t recall any general member submitting an article. Would be nice because I know there are plenty boating stories and tips to share.

Rusty's tips

When gasoline evaporates in the carburetor of your out board it leaves a residue which eventually gums it up and causes it to malfunction. It is best to cut off the fuel supply and let the gas in the carb burn out until the engine stalls.

PS - Rusty is a fictitious character. This column is open to all club members to pass on their experience and knowledge to their fellow club members. Don't keep secrets!! Pass it on…
