Pier Demolition Work Days Friday & Saturday May 5th & 6th

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha, what a splendid spring! I think I'm enjoying it more each day it doesn't rain.  May is here - ILYC participates in the Lipton Cup - Another big project is coming, we need your help - And a reminder to be courteous to other members when your bring pets to the club.

Lipton Cup, I'm really excited as it's been several years since we have participated in the Lipton Cup interclub competition. You are all invited, so if you can, come on out to Kaneohe YC and cheer on ILYC as we race Jacare’ around the bay, it would be great to see you there. The Lipton Cup will be held April 29th and 30th, the racing will start around 10am and go to about 3pm on both days.

Demolition of what’s left of the old piers will take place the first weekend in May beginning Friday afternoon on the 5th. Considering the tide will not be working with us -high tide is at midnight that week, we will be working to move the old pier and secure it to the far west end of the lagoon sometime in the next few days, so keep an eye out for floating debris. If you see any debris, secure it, we don't want to create a hazard to navigation. The work weekend will include Friday afternoon May 5th, provided the excavator arrives on time. Plan to come and bring a rake, shovel and gloves. We'll try to get the old dock into the trash bins quickly and have a Cinco de Mayo party shortly after we finish on Saturday evening. Willey has a good spread planned, so sign up and plan to attend.

Pets, Pets - Please remember there are times when your dog/pet shouldn't be hanging around the club, that is - technically, never - I don't want to see pets banned altogether or required to go straight to the boat and not be allowed on the grounds, etc,. This could happen if pet owners are not courteous and mindful of existing policies. If you are the only patron at the club, well that's one thing, but certainly during club events, hosted dinners and parties and such, it's a whole other thing altogether. During these times, please don't bring your pets around or at the least, if you do have to bring them down to the club; keep them on your boat. Remember there is a policy in place with very specific rules: always on a leash, picked up after, and never allowed in the club house area - a little kokua will go a long way and ensure everyone enjoys the club.

Aloha to all members, another month has passed, the wet weather is now safely behind us.  We’ve accomplished a great task finishing a major repair to the West pier.  This task could not have been done without the help and hard work of all the members.  On that note, another great task is ahead of us and that is the "Great Chili Cook Off ".  I have seen the talents of many members and I can't wait to see everyone lending a hand with great enthusiasm, I know we can make this a most successful event.  Now that the West pier has been repaired we have to be vigilant and report any damage to any board member as soon as the damage is noticed.  Repairs to the East pier will also begin soon, please be careful as this pier is beginning to show signs of age.  Also, it is the responsibility of all members to police the area to keep it safe and clean so everyone can enjoy the facilities with family, friends and guests.

See you at the club and see you on the water...

Vice Commodore,

Louis Rogers

Aloha,

In case you missed last month’s article, I provided a primer on how the Americap II system works.  It wasn’t in the print or e-mail edition that Al sent out, but it is posted on the web if you’re interested!

This month’s race had only three competitors (the story of my missed competition is below).  Cocunut Rhumb again squeaked out another victory beating Puff by 15 seconds.  Moonrunner was not far behind after getting off the line a couple of minutes late.

I learned a couple of things this weekend—first don’t trust my fuel gauge.  Second, the Yanmar has little levers at the top of the engine near the valve cover.  These little levers are there to remove compression from the associated cylinder so you can hand crank the motor should you ever find yourself with dead batteries.  If one of those clips is not pulled all the way forward, the engine runs rather rough and has little power.  Our good Commodore taught me this peculiarity about the motor after I had all the injectors out but before I had spent any money getting them checked.  I just wanted to pass this lesson on should any of you ever find a Yanmar that suddenly starts acting poorly.

Hope to see you all at the Lipton Cup this weekend.

To all you Power Boaters (and Sail Boaters to); as you may or may not know, my boat, the Ohana, is finally back in the water and running good.  I know some of you have had to do some minor or even major repairs/upgrades to your boats also.  To this end, I would like to propose a Fishing Tournament next Sunday the 30th of April.  If you are interested, please send me an email at hargreat@hawaii.rr.com and also let me know if you are Power or Sail.  If there are enough people interested, I would like to propose the following:

Cost:  $20.00 per person or $50.00 per boat up to 4 persons (each additional person $15.00).

Registration:  All persons that want in the tourney must register/pay in advance even if part of a boat group.

Start:  0800 hrs (or earlier if you so choose) as long as you have registered and paid.

End:  ~1600 hrs to 1700 hrs back at ILYC.

Judging:  1700 hrs to 1730 hrs.

Awards:  ~1745 hrs. The biggest catch will get 80% of all monies collected.

BBQ:  There will be a BBQ after the awards with steak, baked potatoes, salad provided by the RC for Power

Please ensure that all boaters are prepared to go out, keep safety in mind, get back before dark, unless you like to navigate in the dark, and ensure that if you are going to be out after sunset, make sure all your navigation lights are functional.

Fun should be had by all.  Again, above all be SAFE.

Respectfully

Tom R. Hargreaves

Port Captain

Tim DuBois

Well, the Port Captain has been slacking for the last couple of newsletters so I thought I would get motivated and try to catch up.

First things First. IT's DONE!!  Many thanks to all of you who helped build the new pier. Hopefully it will give many years of service.

Secondly and most important the pier is done, the north swells are gone, and it is time to go sailing.  This weekend was just awesome weather to be on the water.  Even got to see what may be the last whale of the season right at buoys one and two.

At the last meeting there was much discussion about dock boxes on the new pier, including myself I have only three confirmed people willing to pay for a dock box. Unless more people would like to pay for their own dock boxes it does not look financially feasible. So if you have a slip on the new pier and are willing to pay for your own dock box please e-mail me so I can get a final accurate count.  I forget pretty easy so if you have not e-mailed me I did not count you. Just as a quick reminder, do not put anything other than a power cord or a hose onto the new pier. Personal dock boxes are not allowed and will be removed.

Lastly, if you have not noticed the east pier is falling apart, once the demolition is done the Port Captain workdays will be focused on putting some good band aids on the east pier.

See you at the Lipton Cup, come on down and cheer ILYC on to victory (or at least not embarrassing ourselves) :-) PC

Again we put another edition of The Arrow to print, and the only articles or inputs I’ve received are from the BOD.  The same three Ditty Bag adds are there that have been there all year…none of you have any items for sale that you think club members might be interested in..?? I’ve had more than one of you talk to me about ideas you have for an article or tips and tidbits of info you’d like to pass on to the membership, but no one has yet to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard and get me any inputs.  If you’d like me to write your ideas down for you, you’ve got to let me know, and talk to me while I’m in the club house, not out on the boat or on the docks…those are not very good writing surfaces.  Remember this is as much your sounding board to the membership as it is the BOD.

I know not everyone reads the newsletter, but for those of you that are reading this rag, please notice some of the regular features.  For one, every month at least two or three of you e-mail me asking for one or more of the BOD e-mail addresses…duh, all of the BOD’s e-mail addresses are on the little masthead at the bottom of each and every newsletter I’ve edited in the last two years.  Then there are the questions I get about when a party or event is happening; people I try to put the most accurate info I’ve got into both the calendar here in the newsletter and into the overall calendar on the web site.  It’s not that I don’t like talking to any and all of you, but it seems like the hard work that I and all of your BODs put into this newsletter, our web site and the bulletin board are ignored.  And no one likes to be ignored…are you listening to me…okay enough of my ranting and raving.  Seems that’s what I’m becoming known for around here, I’ll have to work on changing that.

Rough around the edges, rude and lacks common editorial sense

Director of Activities

Willy Bethea

Hola senor and senoras

Dos cerveza por favor,,,,,,,ok so I’m no Spanish god but I do know that the 6th of May we will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo. There is a sign up list so we can get a head count and you can let us know what you will be bringing so we don’t have 16 different 7 layer bean dips. The club will be making Chili Con carne; yes Gary there will be beans in it, Spanish rice, Spanish corn and some jalapeno corn bread, and then to cool it all down there will be some Corona’s and I’m sure some one will bring some margarita’s.

And what is Cinco de Mayo you might ask?

Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans.  That's why Cinco de Mayo is such a party -- A party that celebrates freedom and liberty. These are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862.  So, why Cinco de Mayo?  And why should Americans savor this day as well?  Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. The French Army sent by Napoleon surely would have marched it’s way into the United States which was involved in a civil war. VIVA! el CINCO DE MAYO!!

We have a long work day coming up. This is going to make our Yacht club look even better so see ya all there.

 Adieu, oops that’s French. Adios,,,,,,

Willy

Staff Commodore

Tom Youngblood

From the staff como: I will be available workday weekend 5/6 May for VE’s during lulls in pier demo.

Regarding our pet policy. I wrote it circa 1997.  It was a compromise policy to accommodate two factions in the club.. Those that wanted a TOTAL pet ban and those who were a little more ok with some pet activities.  Until recently the spirit, if not the letter of law, had been followed by most members. Please heed Mike’s remarks.

Tom
