Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

Come on down for the March events, start off with our first of the year fishing tournament, then celebrate all things green, oh, but don’t forget workday on the 10th,

Hope this finds you all enjoying the spring season, there are some great times on the water, whales and turtles seem to be everywhere.  We still have quite a number of lows passing this time of year so watch for your window to guarantee your lunch stays down the hatch.

Be sure to sign up with Paul and participate in the first fishing tourney of the year.  Paul promises fresh fish for chow no matter how many are caught, so don’t miss out.  For those that enjoy the block party downtown we’ll celebrate early at ILYC to get you in the mood.  Gary and Tony will be looking for your help on the 10th for workday so mark your calendars and bring your gloves.

Thanks to Hook Driver our opening day entourage arrived in style.  Having an opportunity to meet the Morning Light crew was really neat.  Check the web and follow along as they prepare for the 44th Transpac. It’s a great site to gather some background on the race, check it out at: http://www.pacifichighproductions.com/.

Aloha everyone, this year is turning out to be a very productive one for the club.  It's not just the improvements made by the landlord, in particular, the fence and parking lot.  It's mostly the actions that we have personally taken that have changed the appearance and the atmosphere at the club and the facilities as a whole.  Maalox to everyone for your participation, hard work and dedication during the work days, and I hope to see you at this up coming work day on the 10th.  On this note, it is because of each member’s personal efforts that we have a clean and hospitable facility.  However, in order to continue to have a suitable environment for everyone, those members with dogs should continue to be considerate and pick up your dog's waste and properly dispose of it.  Please realize that having your dog with you at the club is a privilege and not a right.  On the other hand, it's not right for other members to have to dodge dog litter or even clean it up.  Remember, we are what make our club a success.  See you at a clean and hospitable club facility.

Vice, Louis

Aloha All

Well at last!!! After three false starts ILYC actually started and finished a race. Puff took the honors with a very fast 1:27:10 elapsed time, handicap or no handicap that was a fast run just 2 minutes off the record for the inshore course.  Galia and Moonrunner had a neck and neck race the whole time and after some more research the two boats are actually handicapped dead even, so congratulations Jason.  Ben was five minute's off the pace, but new sails are on the way and that should help.  There has been a change to the March races, the first race on March 3rd will be the offshore race, and the March 24th race will be in shore. The reason for the swap is to allow the sailboats that want to fish in the year’s first ILYC fishing tournament a chance to race and fish in the tournament at the same time. The start will be at the normal line just outside the lagoon but the finish line will be at buoys one and two. For the finish, as you cross the line between the buoys simply record your time and then you’re free to turn back out to sea and continue fishing. Winds and waves permitting the race course will allow for some tactics on how to catch a fish and win the race at the same time.

One other note is HYRA's spring run to Ko Olina is on March 24th, this is one of the most popular races in the HYRA schedule, even if you don't want to race it is a great opportunity just to take your boat to Ko Olina, enjoy the sailing, the dinner at Ko Olina, and the party afterwards.

See you on the water

1500     Weigh in

I have laminated the power boaters list and will distribute it at the March General Meeting.  The point of this card is to list the power boaters who may be able to help our other boaters out if they are in distress.

Fish On!!

We’ve seen a lot of activity in the “Ditty Bag” over the last few months, I can’t say that advertising here in your club newsletter will actually sell your boat or other goods and services, but it surely can’t hurt.  And as I mentioned last month when you do advertise here in The Arrow, your fellow club members can become part of your sales team.  Since no one, not one single member has asked me to change or add anything to the newsletter in months…well here it is, should look pretty much the same this month as last (hopefully the articles are different).  Please let me know what you want to see in your monthly update…without feedback, good or bad, things do not progress, they just stay the same, so please speak up.

Treasurer

Aloha.

First the good news, our Landlord has decided to issue "ILYC" decals to members of our club in order to distinguish our vehicles from other non-resident passes.  There is an ongoing problem with "non-resident" vehicles parking in unauthorized spaces thus creating problems with the residents. One of the favorite places for "Grey-boat" riders to park is in and around our ILYC parking area.  The Housing authority is issuing parking tickets to these vehicles and want to be able to distinguish between "us" and "them".  We will be given the decals for distribution sometime in March and we plan to hand them out to "members in good standing" on the ensuing weekends.

The bad news is the following past members are no longer "in good standing" for failure to pay 2007 annual dues:  Tom Endfinger; Chuck Longley; Andy Marshall; and Cassidy Rasmussen.

Director of Activities

Larry Rock

Greetings to all at ILYC, another month of celebrations has gone by and if you missed them we hope to see you participate this month. The Super Bowl Party was a huge success. Good food, good times and plenty to drink were enjoyed by a great turn-out of loyal ILYC members. A group of us went over to the Waikiki Yacht Club opening day festivities and rubbed elbows with some of our sister club brethren. It was a nice cruise, great scenery and other than a little Coast Guard visit, a beautiful day to see some of what our Hawaiian waters offer this time of year. Our Poker “pick-up” games have been big fun. If you would like to participate just let me know and we add you to our call list for last minute players. The event of the month will be our Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. Our party will be on the 16th to ensure there are no commitment problems with Island activities. Food and drink will be provided, so if you have a little Irish in you or are Irish at least for the day come on out and hoist a “party drink” of choice with your friends in the club. Thanks for your time and I hope to see you all soon out at our little slice of paradise called ILYC.

From the Staff Commodore:

Good work day for Feb. and your local contingent of Coast Guard Auxiliary did a total of four VE’s when workday was pau. The port captain is making a great effort in PH permits up to date. With more than 50 boats in the club and all requiring permits, let’s see, 4 minus # boats =??? and about 8 work days left. Remember get it done now and don’t panic when it’s time to visit Pass & ID to renew your permit.

Opening day- WYC welcomed us.  Those of us that could go had a great time.

We also participated in a CG boarding in front of a large contingent of the boating community in route to WYC. Lesson learned: don’t fly a cocktail flag at 0900 in the AM especially when passing a USCG vessel. Skipper Rock had it well in hand with all the required stuff in good order and passed with no problems.

Rusty's tips

Rusty's Wood treatment:  1/3 Mineral Spirits, 1/3 Tung Oil and 1/3 Varnish makes a deep penetrating, long lasting, low gloss finish.  Let the first coat sink in and harden then apply a second coat.  A third coat is seldom required.  It beats applying umpteen coats of varnish with slow drying times.
