Aloha,

There have been some really great gatherings of late at ILYC; glad to see everyone getting out on the water and enjoying the club. May brought us lots of birthday celebrations as well as a Mexican fiesta, and a fishin' bonanza!  Mahalo to all of you for sharing your time, especially those that helped with set up and clean up.

Dogs running about the club are again becoming an issue. Please review these rules copied from the constitution:

1.  Pets will not be allowed in the clubhouse.  The clubhouse is defined as the roofed area which includes the kitchen, bar, lanai, and ice machine/barbecue grill sheltered area.

2.  Dogs will be leashed at all times and in the company of the member on the premises of ILYC.

3.  Cats will be caged or otherwise in the physical possession of the member, i.e. in the arms of the member while on the premises of ILYC.

4.  Birds will be caged or in the physical possession of the member while on the premises of ILYC.

5.  Pet excrement is the pet owner’s responsibility to dispose of in the proper manner consistent with good health and sanitation requirements.

6.  Pets on a member's vessel must not be a nuisance to other members or neighbors in the housing area.  Pets also must be properly cared for and receive humane treatment.

In my opinion, work days and other club sponsored events are probably the worst times to have your pet at the club. Those with pets at the club, be considerate of the majority of members that don't bring pets to ensure you will continue to be able to have your pet participate in your boating experience.

Mike

Aloha to all members of the ILYC. The CHILI COOK-OFF is coming September 8TH!!

We want this year’s event to be fun for all.  Please help us make it a great success! We need volunteers for set-up of the event as well as tear down and clean-up.  In particular, we need a DJ or two.  DJs will be needed from noon to 1800.  You can sign up for 2 hours, 3 hours, or the whole shift if you are a glutton for punishment. You can provide the music or help us compile some play lists.

When you pick up your 10 free tickets from Sue, she will ask you to sign up for a volunteer shift. We will have tickets ready for distribution at the June General Meeting.  (See the Chili Cook-Off   “Rules of the Road” section toward the end of the newsletter for more information.)
Check out entry information and more at http://www.ussailing.net/ilyc/ChiliCookoff.htm  (Thank you Tony!)

If you can help out, please email Louis Rogers (louisrogers@hawaii.rr.com) and Sue (fuller@omsoft.com)  MAHALO!

Aloha,

We have a few slips open for new or current members.  The slips are E14 and W14 (W29 will open soon as Alisa will make her way down to Ala Wai and be up for sale).  If you know people that need a slip, invite them over and let me know.

According to my records, the Hana Girl, Kolea and Play Toy have permits that expire the end of May.  The Kona Kai and Ivictus permits will expire the end of June.  Thanks to all who have gotten an extra copy of their permit and stuffed it into my box with your renewal.  Just ask Port Ops to make you an extra copy when they make theirs.

I need to reiterate that owners of boats are responsible for the actions of people working on their boats.  We had a incident over the weekend where work was being done on a boat without the owner present.  A spill occurred that could have cost the owner significantly.  Fortunately, several members that were present at the club knew how to contain and remove the substance to the satisfaction of Pearl Harbor.  This incident had a happy ending but our policy is that if work is being done on your boat, the owner or a representative must be present.  This is for your own protection as well as that of the club.

Please continue to work together to preserve our little corner of paradise.

Thanks,

Tony Snodgrass

At this month’s meeting I’m going to propose a vote to either keep The Arrow publication the same as it is today (I try to get this rag out the week prior to our club meetings).  Or a new alternative publication schedule, I propose to publish The Arrow a week after the meetings.  My intent of publishing the newsletter prior to meeting night is to get the membership information about upcoming events and goings on, to hopefully get everyone to come to the monthly meeting night.  If we move the publication of The Arrow until after meeting night, your Board of Directors could then use this forum to chronicle the decisions were made on meeting night, and let you know about any plans we have for the future.  Both intentions seem to have merit, please come down to the club on Wednesday June 6th and let us hear what you think.

If you’ve not yet joined in our sailing race fleet you should come on out and have some fun sailing in the sun…oh yeah, and you don’t have to have a boat, or sail your own boat to join in on the fun.  Every week if there are crew on the lanai at 1100, they find a boat to sail on, no one has ever been left sitting without a boat to sail on.  There is always room for one (two or three or) more.  And don’t forget the great Pupu party afterwards, along with my favorite part, the Talking Story or telling of “sea tales” and now some sailors also seem to be catching fish and telling “fish stories” as well…

It’s summer time once again at the club, what a great time to come down and enjoy our little corner of paradise!  What a great opportunity to help out the club, just a little effort each time you come down.  Please start by picking up after yourself.  Along with food and fun come bugs!  Lots of them!  They are more than happy to pick up anything left behind in the kitchen, whether it’s in the microwave, left out on the table, or dumped in the sink.  We need to be careful to take care of the dishes as soon as they are dirty.  Rinsing and putting dirty dishes in the sink is NOT cleaning up after yourself.  Just who do you think is going to come along behind you and wash your dirty dishes?  Granted the roaches just love a good bowl for swimming.  It’s easier to keep the flies down if the trash cans are emptied when they are full at the end of the evening, instead of 2-3 days later.  Just a little clean up after yourself makes the club much more enjoyable for everyone.

Aloha, wow what a month, Promotions, parties, a fishing tournament, sailing race, the ILYC was in full force in May. The Derby/Cinco de Mayo celebration was a huge hit and thanks for all your support if you were one of the ones that, helped set-up, cook or clean and or brought pupus. June brings the summer break for many family members and I ask that you assist one another in keeping our grill and kitchen areas clean and ready for use by the next member. We don’t have maids or garbage men, so clean up after yourself and if you are the lucky one to fill a trash container please empty it!

I will close with one last request: If you are a dog/cat owner and bring your dog/cat to the club, please keep him or her away from the clubhouse area (anything under the roofed area). It’s a matter of courtesy for other members. When food and drink is being enjoyed by your fellow members the last thing they want to see is a begging animal at their feet. Besides courtesy it’s also a matter of hygiene. I know your pets are like family members, but they also lick their butts.

See you all at the club!

WARNING, WARNING

IF YOU HAVE NOT LABELED YOUR SHED, LOCKER OR WATERCRAFT (stored on the small boat rack) LOCKS WILL BE CUT ON ANY LOCKER OR SHED ON JULY 7, 2007.  WATERCRAFT ON THE RACK WILL BECOME PROPERTY OF THE CLUB UNLESS TAGGED BY JULY 7, 2007.  For those members deployed, please contact me or any member of the board with a description of what locker, shed or watercraft is yours, so we may tag them.

  THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING.........

Ladies and Gentlemen:  Thank you for an excellent work day on May 5.  It was an easy day, and a lot was accomplished, prior to the "Run for the Roses" our Kentucky Derby party and our Cinco de Mayo party that evening.  Hats off to our Chief Party engineer for his fine events, a good time was had by all.

Please mark your calendars, our next workday will be June 9, 2007.  We are a CLUB and the continued help of all members is needed to keep the club and grounds in a clean, safe and working condition.  On this note I'd like to thank the members that bring in the dumpster on Tuesday's and also the trash cans after they have been emptied.  Your continued assistance is appreciated as I don't normally get home from work till around 1800 and by bringing in the dumpster and cans earlier they don't get filled by residents.  They are for our use.  Again thank you all for your help.

AGAIN, PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS ABOVE; ANY QUESTIONS SEE ME OR ANY MEMBER OF THE BOARD.

Guess what. Hurricane season is just around the corner. Most club members being boaters realize the impact of severe storms. And most of us know what kind of supplies to rat hole for the season, i.e. batteries, water, etc. Honolulu Advertiser in today's issue gave some good data following a disaster model of a direct hit of a category 4 storm that hit vicinity of Pearl Harbor. I'm sure we'll have a plan to react for boats, the clubhouse, etc.

Rusty's tips

In Hawaii, children 12 and under must wear a properly fitting PFD while underway!  Hawaii has a child life jacket wear law, like many states that have enacted mandatory life jacket wear for children 12 years old and younger. It is a good practice to encourage youngsters to wear life jackets at an early age and to continue to wear them into adulthood. As an adult, you should serve as an example. Today’s life jackets are lighter weight and more stylish than the bulky orange “Mae West horse collar” of the past. Purchase a life jacket that you and your family will wear regardless of the conditions.

Every person on board a personal watercraft (PWC) and any person being towed behind a vessel should wear a Coast Guard approved Type I, II, III or V PFD. Inflatable PFDs are not intended for use while participating in tow sports or other high impact sports.  http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/statelaws/Hawaii.html#PFD

This particular Hawaii State Law is strictly enforced by our own Navy Security boats patrolling the Pearl Harbor Defensive Zone.  A couple of our club members have come afoul of this rule.  Be sure you and every passenger on your boat knows where your life jackets are stowed if you are not going to wear your PFD.  But, if you have any children 12 and under on your boat they each MUST wear a properly fitting PFD at all times.  This includes small craft operating in and around the Lagoon even while playing … I know, I’m a kill joy, al
