Aloha,
Hope you all are enjoying your summer,
I for one am getting som heat early on. As I write this I'm driving about the
southern tri-states, eating BBQ, Grits, and Oysters though not all at
once. Sho is hot here.
Our Chili Cook off is fast approaching,
please talk with our VC Louis about your desire to participate. Louis has
several activities he needs help with, from soliciting prizes to planning and
preparing food. Give him a call or email so he will know he can count on your
support.
Mahalo to those who came out again, as
you have done so many times, to demolish the old west pier - ya'll did real
good. Enjoy the summer, no more dock build this summer, just some repairs on
regular work days.
A final thought as I'm surrounded by
hurricane enthusiasts here...what would you do to secure your property/vessel
should we find ourselves in the direct path of one? Some food for
thought, there's no time like the present to consider your plan. As a
club we should discuss this situation.
Meanwhile, take care of each other and
be safe.
seeyaonthewater,
Mike
Louis Rogers
Aloha
and mahalo to every one that made an appearance and participated in
the demolition of the old piers. That effort and every other member's
dedication to team spirit is certainly apparent by the cleanliness of the
facilities. Once again, thank you very much for being here.
Just a friendly reminder, the
countdown is on. There are only 4 more short months or better yet,
92 days exactly till the 31st annual chili cook-off. I've mailed out
89 flyers and requests for donations to local businesses and I've already received
several positive responses. I'm sure that others will respond just as
positively, long before the chili cook-off date. Remember, any and all
suggestions will be listened to and anyone with a special talent or expertise
is certainly welcome to volunteer his or her services. I'll keep reminding you
of this great event until the last day. So, get your
family, your friends and your neighbors together and get them out
here and celebrate with the best yacht club on the island.

Aloha Sailors,
For those who
missed the meeting last month, I wanted to provide a recap from the Lipton Cup
series we participated in at the end of April.
Bottom Line: we got killed!
Although we were pretty fast going upwind, our transitions to the chute
out and back was terrible. The lessons
learned are that we have to have a team of at least 7 people (max weight 1705
lbs for crew). The crew has to train
together and we have to make a few modifications to the boat to be ready for
next year. Congrats go out to Kaneohe
Yacht Club who squeaked out a win over another J-35.
This month we
had one inbound race. Puff wiped us out
with Jacaré and Moonrunner pulling up the rear.
The outbound race was cancelled—high winds took some of the gumption out
of us—but the sailing spirit prevailed and we built the Widgeons up and raced
them. Special note: you have to lock down the centerboard when racing
the Widgeons otherwise it will fold up as you gain speed going upwind resulting
in a turtled craft—a lesson Jason and I learned the hard way!
We have an
inshore scheduled for June 17 and an offshore scheduled for June 24. As always, Capt’s meeting is at 1100 with a
1200 start. Even if you don’t have a
boat to sail, come on out and crew with others--there’s always room.
Have a great
month in our little corner of paradise!

Aloha All;
AND THEN THERE WAS FISH....ONO its mister Ono. Yes we did have our Memorial
weekend fishing tourney and even though there were only 2 entrants, it was
still a success. I am pleased to announce that Roger Stone (Jolly Roger)
caught the big one, a three foot Ono that he promptly cut up, gutted, and put
in the cooler in a matter of minutes. Roger also received the $40.00
prize and will be awarded the surprise prize of a gift certificate from Stuart
Andersons. I sure do wish that more Power People could have joined us in
this event but I guess you all had more important things to
take care of. This event was a lot of fun and extremely enjoyable.
If we had more participation...well...it’s a dream I have. I hope to see
more involvement for the next Power event so stay tuned for the word.
Stay safe, have fun, enjoy life.

What
a great Memorial Day for sailing. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves
as much as I did. While it is important to remember all those that
have given their all for our freedom it is just as important to put those
freedoms to good use and enjoy the beautiful waters of Hawaii (that's my
interpretation anyway). Now for the bad news.....the east pier is falling
apart. I don't expect that shocks anyone but starting this workday we
will be putting some effort into patching it up. If you can weld we can use
your help, if you can turn a wrench or use an angle grinder those skills are
needed as well. I expect to do the minimum required to keep it together as
the club kitty builds up and it can be replaced. See you at workday. If your
boat is on the east pier and there is something you feel really needs to be
fixed shoot me an e-mail so I can ensure we have material on hand for
workday.

You want useless
information? I got tons of it!
Allan (rant
& rave) Cameron
Be sure to check
out this month’s Ditty Bag section, we’ve got lots of different things for
sale, both boating related and not so boating related…thanks to all of you that
submitted items. I’m going to see if
Tony can post the photos some of you sent me on the web site since printing
them here in The Arrow isn’t very practical just yet…
So I was trying to figure out what
to “rant and rave” about this month, but I just couldn’t come up with
anything. Lori and I did however have a
great time at the Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Our new Activities director is making quite a good go of it. If you’ve not attended any of his soirees you
are missing out on one of the perks of being a member of ILYC. Speaking of being a member of ILYC, I would
like to remind everyone that each and everyone of you are our one and only
means of advertisement for this club.
Now I know some of you want to keep our corner of paradise a
secret. But in order for our little club
to survive we need new members. And in
order for people to know about us, we need each of you to tell your eligible
friends about the club. As I go to print
this edition of The Arrow, we have all of 64 members in our club…and not even
that number of boats at our docks, or tied to mooring balls, or on trailers in
the yard. There is plenty of room at the
inn, please spread the word, we are open for business and looking for new
members.
For all of you
sailors the racing season is well underway, but that doesn’t mean you’re too
late to join in on all the fun. Even if
you haven’t been to a race yet this year you could still win. Come on down for either the Inshore or
Offshore course, or both. Check the
calendar here in The Arrow for dates and times.
Join up as crew for the day on one of the other boats in the club if
you’re not comfortable taking your own boat out. So far each and every race this year there
has been more than enough room on boats for anyone and everyone that wanted to
come out for a sail. And I don’t think
anyone has to worry about our club skippers getting into too much trouble out
there, heck the Offshore race for May was scrubbed due to lack of interest…if
you ask me no one was too interested in breaking their boats, it was blowing 25
knots with gusts well beyond…four skippers and some crew showed up but the only
boats that left the dock were the Widgeons.
Still a good time was had by all.
And remember, this is ILYC, it’s not about wining the race, but rather talking
good story and eating great food afterwards; though you just might learn a
little something about sailing along the way.
And finally we get
to my rant…you’ve all heard this one before but it is worth repeating. This club relies on your participation. We need your presence at work days, this is
even more important than your money…that is why we offer deep discounts on
moorage via work chits. Our Port Capt
and so many others did participate in building wonderful new docks. But now we need you all to keep coming down
on work days to repair the old dock.
There is also plenty of work around the facilities that needs to be kept
up after. Next month (July) quarterly
moorage slip fees are due, so get those work chits now. Remember we have no staff or workers paid for
by the club, each of us members are the staff and the work force that keeps
this place running. So please come on
down to the club on work day and help keep ILYC a viable fun place to keep a
boat.
Rough around the
edges, rude and lacks common editorial sense
Director
of Activities
Willy Bethea
Looking at a calendar, for a change, I see
where we have Fathers day coming up on June 18th. Since real men eat
red meat we’ll have a Steak BBQ on Saturday, June 17th at 1800, the
club will provide the steak, beverage, and baked potato. Please bring your
favorite side dish, there will be a sign posted in the club.
As the club activities director I’m always
receptive to ideas. I’ve been kicking around some ideas for the kids. I’d like
to try a movie night if there is enough interest. It won’t be just for kids, we
can pick a movie that will entertain every one. We’ll hang a white sheet and
rent a projection TV, serve some pop corn and sodas and just kick back for an
hour or two. If there is enough interest we’ll give it a try this month around
the 24th of June.
Another idea brought to me was a bingo party.
I’m not sure how to work out the details on that one but I’ll work on it.
Till next
month, keep this in mind, some little known facts concerning silly laws that
are still on the books: By law, people in Vermont must take at least one bath a
week, In Oklahoma dogs need a permit signed by the mayor in order to congregate
on private property in groups of three or more, In Roanoke, VA it’s against the
law to advertise on tombstones and It’s illegal to put coins in your ears in
Hawaii.
Aloha
Willy

I can work or I can drink. If I try to do both I can't do justice to either

Grumpy day. Have a mellow complaint. I think we
need to tune up the compliance with the pet policy. Most comply with at
least the spirit of the policy. But please keep the dogs out of the clubhouse
or at least on a leash when members are eating. Maybe some new members haven’t
got the word. Thanks for your kokua.
