General Membership Meeting July 5th @ 1930                    Board of Directors Meeting July 5th @ 1830

Earl Reid Memorial – Saturday 22 July – 11am departure from Rainbow (expect to pass ILYC around 1145/1200), family will notify ILYC as they depart and head to sea.  Plan is to go out approx 2-3 miles and perform the at sea ceremony.  Linda Weiland (ordained minister) will read the eulogy.  After the spreading of ashes, lei's, Bag Pipes and photos, we will return to ILYC for festivities.  The plan has a band that will play local music, haven't gotten a confirmation from the Navy yet, but hope to have a flag presentation to the family upon return to ILYC.  Participating boats should monitor VHF channel 68

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,
Happy 4th of July!  I hope you all are taking advantage of the great weather and getting out on the water...I have, and it's been great; in and out of the lagoon...It's been great seeing so many of you down at the club.  I've only a few things to pass along this month; Chili Cook-off call for volunteers, fire works, and it's status quo for use of the lagoon.
HELP, please step-up and ask your Vice Commodore, Louis what you can do to help him with the Chili Cook-off coming up the 9th of September this event will be here before you know it. Plan on inviting your friends to the Cook-off, there will be lots of activities for folks of all ages.
Each member /family will have up to ten admission tickets to share with family and friends so mark your calendars and talk it up.
Iroquois Island club doesn't allow fireworks -exploding and aerial types.  This restriction includes ILYC, as a tenant of their community we will observe the restriction.  So, please blow 'em up and shoot 'em high in your own back yard, not at the club.  Mahalo.
If you desire to use a small boat in the lagoon, you may do so.  Please ensure the keiki under 12 have a life jacket on, it's the federal law – I couldn't find in my searching if Hawaii had adopted a more restrictive measure.  Don't venture out into the entrance or impede the greyboat
traffic.  I'm not sure what we can expect of the security patrol folks, we'll wait and see, if they do visit be cordial. I've extended the offer for the patrols to tie up at the T and frequent our club.
Seeyaonthewater,
Mike

Thanks to all for your participation in the club's activities, especially work days and the club sponsored festivities specifically, the father's day cookout.  The big day is getting closer and closer.  Before you know it September 9th will have come and gone and the 31st annual great Chili Cook Off will be history.  But, don't let that stop you from volunteering your talents and being a part of this history in the making.  Although, some slots have already been assigned coordinators, they may need members to help facilitate.  For instance, Gary Sutton: Entertainment, Marcus Reed: Bar\Beverages, Karen Banes: Lei Greeter and Joelle DuBois: Swap Meet.  This is just a small sample of what is needed so if you have a pickup truck for hauling tables and chairs or the inflatable bouncer, we could sure use your time and efforts. Also, on Friday September 8th volunteers are needed to help set up as well as Sunday September 10th volunteers are needed to clean up and transport tables, chairs and inflatable back to their point of origin.  Mahalo to everyone for keeping the facilities clean and safe, see you at the club and see you on the water too.

Vice Commodore, Louis

Ahhhhh!

Life in our little corner of paradise is starting to perk up.  Heather and Brian threw a great party that included sailing the widgeons around with Mike’s catamaran/Father’s Day gift, we had two sailing races this month with five boats each and there’s an exciting month ahead.

Let’s start with our two races—the Inshore finished with Puff narrowly nipping Moonrunner, followed by Jacare, Coconut Rhumb, and Sun Tui while the Offshore finished with Puff, Jacare, Terra Moana, Moonrunner and the Dog House rounding out the fleet.  That means Coconut Rhumb has given up her lead in the point standings and Puff is the boat to beat once again!

There’s been a lot of talk about sailing to different areas around the island for the July 4 celebration.  We’re thinking about taking Jacare and anchoring off of Hickam to watch the festivities (I still have to find the anchor and some line).  If you’re not sure what you want to do, get with Tim, Mike or I and we’ll give you lots of suggestions.  August will bring the race to Kauai and I have a huge list of people that want to participate.  I think we may need a second boat as my weight limit for racing is 1705 lbs.  We’ll discuss that at the meeting next week.

We have an inshore race scheduled for 15 July, scattering of Earl Reid’s ashes on 22 July, and are trying a Sailing/ Fishing trip for 29 July.  It should be a fast month!

Thanks to all of the normal workday crowd, and many of our newest members, we had a relatively easy work day in June and the east pier is again fully functional.  Come on down for the next workday on 8 July. The plan is to continue to add layers of bubble gum and bailing wire to the east pier, we will also add some additional anchors to the west pier and repair the bulging water line. Dock box update - I am still waiting on some additional estimates for dock boxes, one last call for anyone else interested in purchasing a dock box (for either pier), please send me an e-mail. If you sent me an e-mail already I have you on the list.

Aloha,

Happy Fourth of July - Independence Day - time to reflect - time to pay your ILYC third quarter mooring fees!  Yep, time sure does fly when you have to pay out the big bucks.

Everyone should have received their bill by email, if you have a slip but didn't get a bill, please let me know as soon as possible.  Payment must be received no later than 15 July in order to use those hard earned work chits.  Each chit is worth 25% off your mooring fees and a maximum of two chits can be submitted.

Happy Independents day!

For the 4th of July we’re planning an ice cream social. There will be ice cream at the club with toppings and cones prior to the fireworks and after. Rumor has it there will be some hot dogs, chips and dip, and beverages. For the fireworks most of us are heading over to the beach to catch the big ones at Hickam, Pearl Harbor and as long as the weather is good, Schofield.

As normal we’ll provide the noon meal for the work day on the 8th of July and something a little different this month, we’ll have some pu pu’s for race day on the 29th of July. The club will provide BBQ chicken parts, salads, and chips, oh yea, beverages.

Aloha

Willy

Well it’s that time of the year…new member time, lots of new faces around the club, and this is a very good thing.  I for one want to extend a hearty welcome to all of our new members and invite you all to come down to the club on the weekends to join the sailing crew for our “skills challenges” (aka races) or just come out for a daysail.  I had two new members aboard Puff for the June InShore race.  If you’re unfamiliar with either the channel to and from Pearl Harbor, or the harbor itself, there are plenty of “old salts” in the club that would be happy to take you for a ride on their boat, or ride with you on yours to get you familiar with the hazards and dangers of our area.  And while I’m talking about new members, don’t forget to talk up the club to your friends, neighbors and co-workers, there are still empty slips on our docks, and lots of room for mooring balls.  New members are the life blood of this club, we always need new members to join our ranks.

The Ditty Bag here in The Arrow is doing good business, there are at least two items that sold since last month’s edition and thus are missing this month and I can attest that one of those items sold solely because it was advertised here (and only here) in The Arrow’s Ditty Bag section.  Keep giving me ads for both your boating and non-boating items you want to sell.  And check out the ads to see if there just happens to be an item you can’t live without…

As always I’m looking for participation from all of the club’s members, I’d like to see articles about your boating experiences, any tips you can share on boating maintenance, skills, or pretty much anything nautical…this newsletter is a grab bag of information.  If you’ve got something to pass on to the other members of the club, please contact me and I’ll work with you to get your information into The Arrow.  This is our club newsletter and we all get to participate in it’s creation.

For those of you that didn’t get to make it down to the club for our Saturday Father’s Day celebration, well you missed out on our new Activities Director’s feast.  Willie definitely stepped up to the plate and knocked another one out of the park.  And the cookie monster was out in force this time too…ummm snicker doodles…if you don’t make it down to this type of club event you are just missing out on one of the great benefits of being a member of ILYC.  Thank You Willie and everyone who brought food and friendship to the party.  Be sure to check out the calendar here in The Arrow for the next ILYC Party.

Speaking of the Calendar, please note that a couple of regularly or previously scheduled events have had to change their dates…July’s OffShore Sailing race will be held on Saturday the 29th (not Saturday the 22nd) in conjunction with the July Fishing Tournament which will now also be held on Saturday the 29th (not the 22nd).  Saturday July 22nd has been reserved for scattering the ashes and a memorial for longtime member of ILYC, Earl Reid.

Staff Commodore

Tom Youngblood

With the excellent food by Chef Willy, the sail races, and fishing events, I don’t see why we don’t have more members and our slips filled. The chili cook off is a good time to invite potential members down to showcase our organization.

Racing is fun again for me after a long layoff and a minor incident in my first race back in the fleet. Years ago, before Sun T’ui, I had a Cal 20 and did quite well racing. I wish the Catalina 22’s as well as other boats would join the racing fleet. We even used to have a Catalina 22 bunch that conducted their own racing class events as well as competing in the club open races.

Come on out skippers you’re missing some fun.

Tom
