General Membership Meeting 4 January @ 1930       Board of Directors Meeting January 4th @ 1830

Welcome New Members

Jason & Colleen Clotfelter AD/USN

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

Here we go, another terrific year in paradise. I for one plan to sail more, boat more, fish more, dive more and enjoy completing some much needed improvements.

You have a great line up of board members again this year, thanks for your continued support. Be sure to thank those that stepped up if you haven’t already for their sacrifice of time.

Our new security instruction is up for signature, no really, really, it is this time. These guys we’re not kidding 7 months ago when I was told “maybe by the holidays…”

Our pier fix is going full speed, please come down and participate. Though Tim has the real plan we might, I think with your help, complete this by March. We have enjoyed the efforts of previous members for a long while and this time it’s our turn. So far the new roof, facility upgrades and pier repair have enjoyed some super camaraderie and the guarantee of a terrific lunch. If you haven’t been down for these weekends you are missing a good time. Pitching in, seeing the results of your hard work is satisfying, and helping members learn to measure, allow for blade width and operate chop saw, and a wily ½ drill is down right fun!

Some have expressed concern for work chits; I do the same scramble every time Charlie emails my bill.  Plan ahead and see the Facilities manager Gary or Port Captain Tim to ensure you will have your two prior to the first 15th of the quarter.  If you are at the club repairing the pier with Tim or take on projects for Gary, make sure you let them know if you need a chit.  The idea that every time you walk thru the gate you will be receiving a chit will not keep the club up and running.  Our maintenance team is the membership.  Taking on and accomplishing the pier repair is above and beyond the normal routine; it is not a work weekend Saturday - receive a chit project. To clarify, if you participate in the repair of the pier as many have, I agree you are entitled to a work chit if you need one. No one on the board will slight you, but your club still needs your time on the workdays as much as your help with the pier project. It’s only possible that we have a well kept club by the steady year round strain on the required maintenance. The idea behind the work chit is to encourage you financially to help maintain the club.  Fixing the pier is hopefully a once every 15 years project, so come on down and share the camaraderie not because you have 11 work chits and need one more for an even dozen. I hope my round about ramble helped to clear this up.

Please attend the meetings, policies will be adopted and or modified during the January meeting along with adoption of our operating budget.

Looking forward to a Happy New Year ahead,

Seeyaonthewater   Mike

Vice Commodore

Louis Rogers

Okay, these are the first official words from the newly elected Vice Commodore. I am still suspicious of the election procedures and am considering my first duty to request a recount of the ballots for the vice position.  What ever happened, I am sure it was a team effort, and of course team work is what this organization is all about.  Whether I was shanghaied or vicariously nominated to eliminate anyone else from the suffering of a position of leadership, I gladly accept the position.  Even though I am a man of few words and less talent, I will do my best to continue to perform the duties as Vice Commodore this year 2006.  Also, I would like to thank each and every one of you for considering me for the position and having the confidence in my abilities.  Having said that I would like everyone to know that I will definitely be open to suggestions and with your permission I would also like to utilize your experiences and with your support and team work I pray for another productive and successful year.

Thank you, Louis D. Rogers

RC for Sail

Tony Snodgrass

Ahoy All,

I’m still trying to get a handle on this RC for Sail thing—I’ve got spreadsheets of previous races, HYRA schedules, and last year’s boards are changing hands now.  In short, I still haven’t a clue as to what our schedule will be this year, but here are my ideas at this point.   We will still have a race once a month—although I’m thinking of having the January race on Feb 5 followed by a Super Bowl party—more to come at the board meeting.  I want to have two divisions—the inbound races and the outbound with an overall being a combination of the two.  The point of making such a division is those with small boats can compete every other month in the inbound division and don’t have to brave the outbound conditions.  Hopefully, this will increase participation in the events.  Finally, I want to get the 14’s up to speed this year.  We have several young sailors in the club now, some members new to sailing, and some that just enjoy dinghy sailing on a regular basis.  Having the dinghies available will allow us to teach new and young members, refresh older members and should be good entertainment all year long.  This project will require some coordination with the members that own the boats and I’ll talk to them before the next board meeting.

I should have a lot more information at the next meeting (everyone should come—looks like it will be interesting)!  If you can’t make it, I’ll find an area of the bulletin board to post information.

RC for Power

Tom Hargreaves

I want to put together several events for the Power People in the coming year.  So far I am thinking of a boat Poker Run, supporting the handicap kids fishing event, possibly a one or two day fishing tourney and a dive run/lobster hunt to the north shore (good lobster over there).  Also, maybe some type of event that Power can do in conjunction with Sail.  If any of the Power People have any other ideas, please let me know.  That is all I have for now but stay tuned for more info.

Sincerely    Tom Hargreaves    RC for Power

Port Captain

Tim DuBois

Happy New Year!! For those that missed it the Xmas party was great, largest crowd in years, great food and lots of fun was had by all.  I would like to say thank you for re-electing me as your port captain for 2006. Al said I needed a resolution, so mine is to finish the new pier in the first quarter of 2006 and get the old pier demolished shortly thereafter. I’d also like to say well done to those who helped out with the Kona wind mess, the strong Kona winds had broken the old dock free and the new dock was being blown to close to shore and rubbing the electrical wires. Thanks again. Remember if you see something wrong please let someone know and don't just walk away.

Two work weekends will be held in January, 7-8 January and the following weekend 14-15 January. If all goes well that should just about finish the major construction, so come on down and help with the final push to finish the pier.

Also a friendly reminder, to keep a slip in ILYC you must provide the Port Captain a copy of your Pearl Harbor permit. You can leave it in the PC's box at the yacht club.

Secretary

Allan Cameron

First off, I want to remind everyone how vital some of our rules and regs are…if you bring your kids down to the club to play in or around our facilities and the water, you MUST watch them.  One of our members had to rescue a child who was playing on the new ramp and fell in…he most likely would have drowned right there in five feet of water had not another parent taken quick action…many thanks to Beth for jumping in the water and saving one of the keiki…I do not want to blame or single out the parent of this child, unfortunately this is not an isolated incident (having to save a life fortunately is) but unattended children is way too common an issue at our club.  We’ve had numerous small accidents, especially cuts from kids trying to climb and play around the old T-pier.  We averted a tragedy this time; let’s not tempt fate a second time.  That and other members are not your free babysitting service…

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Andy and Deb you two were not here, but you still put everything in motion, assigned duties to your alternates and once again ensured the club had an absolutely outstanding Christmas Party.  To all of Andy and Deb’s able bodied assistants or substitutes Willie, Michelle, Beth, Tony, Lori, Gary, Doe and oh so many others, I and everyone that was there wish to thank you all for a truly memorable evening and some pretty damn good eats.  And as has become the norm, the leftover were pretty good for at least the next week…Gary’s escapades with those Zippy’s coupons will be remembered for many months, if not years…and all the other “joyful” exchanges of gifts…a great turnout, great fun.

Don’t forget, we will have a New Year’s Eve party and 2006 Board of Director’s installation on Saturday Dec 31st starting at 1830…sign-up on the easel down at the club for the “pu-pu’s” you would like to share…

On a dues and fees note, I’m going to hold a Membership Card Printing Party during Tim’s second workday this month (Jan 14th & 15th).  So if you get your dues check delivered to Charlie early (so he has your check in his hands by the night of the 13th) I’ll print your membership card(s) on the 14th or 15th and you should be able to pick them up at the club, hot off the press.  If you wait to pay until the Jan 31st deadline you’ll have to pick up your cards at the February or March General Membership Meeting or workdays…  And remember to save the club money, membership cards are only handed out in person at the club, I do NOT distribute membership cards via the US Postal Service.

And finally, this may be the shortest Arrow I’ve yet to print…that in and of itself is not a bad thing, but I’m sure there are many things about our club that should be shared amongst the membership…so please send me your stories, your articles, whatever…but participate and share…

Rough around the edges, rude and lacks common editorial sense

Director of Facilities

Gary Sutton

Hi everyone, hope you all had happy holidays.  Thanks for re-electing me for the 2006 term.  I'll do my best to keep everything operating properly and make improvements as funds permit.  Let me know what you want at the meetings and I'll try to make it happen.  Please come to the meetings as it's the only way to have a voice in what's going on. I am concerned about the high increase in dry slip fees and would like to do something to modify them.  If anyone else feels this way, please let us know at the January meeting.  I know I voted for these fees at the November meeting, but I now feel I was wrong in doing so.

Aloha,  Gary

Director of Activities

Andy Christescu

Well, as many of you know I had to leave for Alaska early, missing the Christmas Party.  I’m happy to report that our daughter Natalie made it thru her surgery and is recovering nicely.  I was told the party was a Huge Success!  Thanks to all who had helped pull it off..  I sure wanted to be there to steal a gift or two!

I’ll be back on Island the 6th of Jan.  Nothing big is planned for January with the exception of working on the docks and speaking of that,, our next big get-together will be the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the “Improved Pier”.  If all goes well and we get max participation it looks like late Feb early March. (Tim will be so relieved)

So come to the meetings and find out what is in the future for our club. It really doesn’t get any better than ILYC we are the best!!

Also:  It’s not too late to sign up and bring your best pu’pu’s for the BOD “Out with the Old,, In with the New” meeting/New Year’s Eve party!!

See ya soon,,   Capt Que
