NEW COMNAVREG HAWAII INSTRUCTION 5510.20C

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,
Happy February! Don't forget your valentine(s), perhaps a sunset cruise will be part of your plan...
Lot's of fun planned for this month, a sailing /super bowl gathering at the club on the 5th and opening day is just around the corner, the 18th.
Our new security instruction has been signed and promulgated. During FPCON Alpha you now can transit to and from sea 24/7, subject to inland traffic rules; remember those constrained by draft have right of way. Following the new instruction procedure you will simply hail on VHF 69 and provide: Skipper's name, Vessel name, Permit number and Number of passengers on board and request to transit.  In addition to 24/7 access to sea, the requirement to prearrange your underway times has been rescinded during FPCON Alpha. Should the FPCON change, the transiting restrictions obviously become more restrictive. Take a few moments to review the new instruction; a copy is available down at the club.
Let me share a few more thoughts regarding this new instruction. Please be patient as harbor control watch standers become familiar with this new procedure. If you feel the need to discuss a particular concern, do it over a telephone not the VHF 69 channel. Think and be safe, if you operate your vessel after sunset be a prudent mariner and do not rely on only one navigation aid. Do your homework and know the range head bearing and know the lit NAVAID's flashing periods so you will be able to differentiate between Hickam and Pearl channels. And do not proceed any further north into Pearl Harbor than our lagoon entrance after dark.  The harbormaster asked that I reiterate that PWC or Jet Ski are not allowed in the NSDA at anytime - that's not allowed anywhere in Pearl Harbor.
Our next event, the day after our workday, is a Super bowl party!  Come one, come all, to the super bowl fiesta!  We'll swap sea stories, and watch the Seahawks try to crush the Steelers.
ILYC's opening day will be downtown along with HYC. WYC, Pearl YC, and Pacific YC.  This is a great event, so plan to attend. If you want to bring your boat, plan ahead and let me know so we can arrange berthing or make arrangements to stay at state Ali Wai dock.  There will be a lot of fun activities and a boat parade that will include a blessing of the fleet so mark your calendar for the third Saturday.
seeyaonthewater,
Mike

Vice Commodore

Louis Rogers

Aloha to all the members of Iroquois Lagoon Yacht Club.  Just think of it, one month down already this year.  However, fast approaching in the next seven months will be the annual "Chile Cookoff".  But before that day comes there are at least two canopies in need of repair, to cover that event.  Further more, I happen to know that there are a lot of great cooks in this club, so break out your favorite recipe and use those secret ingredients and join the other master chefs of chili cooking.  We already have our first outside inquirer as a participant, so don't drag your feet, let's make this the biggest and the best "Chili Cookoff" ever.

Louis, Vice Commodore

Aloha all,

Well our first race was a bust—winds were high, looked like rain—let’s wait until Feb 5.  That’s right!  On Super Bowl Sunday, we will have a Captains Meeting at 1000 with an inbound race starting at 1100.  When we finish, it will be pupus and football!  Can life get better in our little corner of paradise?

Other happenings this month—18 Feb is the opening day blessing of the boats at the Waikiki Yacht Club followed by opening day at Kokohead on the 19th.   Depending on what the work schedule turns out to be, we may try for a second race in February.  This will be announced at the meeting and I’ll follow-up with an e-mail.

Aloha and Howdy all.  As we head into the new year there are some good events planned for the Power People. Please see the Events Calendar that Al will be putting out. I will also be sending out reminders and requests for participation. We can have some great and enjoyable times if everyone gets involved. On a more serious note, as some of you may have heard, a boat had to be towed in. This is NOT a slight on those involved but is instead an eye opener. Please, before you go out, make sure that your vessel is in seaworthy condition and will make a two way trip.  Out and back. A little preventative maintenance, enough fuel, warm clothing, etc goes a long way to make a cruise one of enjoyment. Also, I want to thank Andy for his excellent seamanship, navigational skills, friendship, and dedication for helping bring one of our own back from what could have been a serious tragedy. Muchos Mahalos Andy.  Stay involved and enjoy your boating.

Still waiting for some hardware to arrive for the pier workdays, the 4'th will be a workday if you need a work chit.

Treasurer

Aloha and thanks to the majority of the members who have sent in their membership dues and mooring fees.  For the stragglers, dues were payable no later than 31 January.  I noticed that we are now connected to a water consumption meter so I ask all members to conserve water and electricity as we will now pay for both.  See a water leak, please fix if possible or notify any member of the Board of Directors and please turn off lights when you leave the club.

Jason and Maren Calvert have a new addition to the family.  Her name is Teryn Jeanne' Hoku o'kalani Calvert, born Jan 3, 2006 at 6:45 am.  Coming into the world at 6 lbs 15 oz and 18 and 3/4 inches long.  Teryn went for a boat ride on January the second and couldn't wait any longer to see what all the bumping was about, she emerged on the third and is anxious for the next ride.  Brother Braedon is bugging Mom and Dad for a new fishing pole so he can teach his new sister how to fish.

Mahalo, Charlie

There is no news like good news and the news our esteemed Commodore has brought us is the best news I’ve heard since I became a member of this club…all hail Mike…

Now the real story is are you ready to go sailing at night?  Do you have current and accurate charts and navigational aids?  Do you have a back-up means of communications on your boat (fixed radio, hand-held radio, cell phone, etc, etc.).  Now that we have the rights to use the channel 24 hours a day lets not mess it up…don’t bicker with the tower or any of the patrol boats.  Do not disagree or argue with any of the Navy’s people on the radio.  If you have an issue, call the tower on the phone and discuss it rationally with them off the air.  But always remember, it’s still the Navy’s waters, we are guests in this channel, please don’t ever forget that.  In any dispute while you are out on the water you are wrong and they are right, even if they are wrong and you are right…  If they did make some sort of mistake don’t argue about it on the water, come back to shore and contact a member of the Board, we can then attempt to resolve the dispute.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…I’ve had a couple of requests from members to add more columns to The Arrow.  The first is a column of tricks of the trade, or “expert” advice on anything to do with boating…such as how do you spread that damn silicone calking without getting it all over your hands?  Use an ice cube.  The second is for “quick and easy” recipe sharing.  Do you have a favorite boat (or non-boating) recipe to share?  These two columns are pretty much anything goes, and I’m looking for anyone and everyone in the club to participate in sending me submission for these two columns.  You’ve all got my e-mail address (for you “snail mail” types or anyone else, you can leave me a hard copy in my BOD puka by the soda machine).  If you’ve got any other ideas on how to make The Arrow more usable or interesting, please share, let me know I’m always open to suggestions on how to improve and grow this newsletter.

Rough around the edges, rude and lacks common editorial sense

Director of Facilities

I hope everyone had happy holidays. You must all be rested up for the February work day by now.  We could use some help.  Thanks for all the great support in the past.  I'll have an updated work list posted by the soda machine by meeting day.  If you think you earned a work chit and did not get it,  see me at the meeting.  Also, if you have a slip and no shed assigned, and you want one, please see me and I'll try to work out a solution.

Aloha,  Gary

Director of Activities

The month of March; we will have a clearer picture as soon as the Port Captain reports if the Dock will be complete that month..  Ribbon Cutting Party!!

I am just a few weeks away from being locked in for orders back to the Last Frontier.  With that; we need someone to step up and take on the Rewarding position of Activities Director!!  Starting 1 April. It's a fun & fulfilling job and is the only position that allows you to really get to know all the club members.  See me for any questions and details.  The Commodore will make the final selection.

Judging by the progress/improvements of this Club since I arrived three years ago,,  ILYC is in the best condition ever!!  The improvements that we have been pulled off in such a short time frame are unbelievable and surpassed all accomplishments to date!  The condition as well as the attitudes has improved greatly!  Commodore Mike Vining has been working the new instruction for over 18 months and getting it done was a feat that no one else could have pulled off!! Great Job!! "We", ILYC, Rainbow, and Hickam owe him many a-round of cheer!  You folks have the Best Club in the USA...   Take advantage of all it has to offer..

See ya around,, Andy "Capt. Que"

Is this your last copy of The Arrow?

I’m using the 2005 membership roster to send out this February edition of The Arrow.  If you do not pay your annual dues by the end of January, you will no longer be a “member in good standing” here at ILYC.  What does this mean, besides not getting the next copy of The Arrow, it means you lose your standing for a mooring slip, ball, dry slip or any other service at ILYC.  Our moorage has never been full you say…well not in the last four or five years it has not, but that is in great part due to the restrictive nature of the previous Pearl Harbor security instruction.  The restrictive security instruction has been superseded and I for one fully expect our membership and requests for moorage to exceed our capacity.  Not only that but Tim, our esteemed Port Captain has done an outstanding job of refurbishing the old wooden pier.  Prior to 9/11 ILYC had waiting lists for all manner of boat services, slips, mooring balls and dry slips.  Now that we can enter and leave the Pearl Harbor defensive area at any hours of the day or night, and we don’t have to reserve an “underway time” moorage inside the Harbor is going to be a hot commodity.
