2007 Board Of Directors Elections

Saturday December 2nd @ 1200

ILYC Christmas Party and Gift Exchange Saturday Night December 16th

Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

Request you attend your election of 2007 board members; it's time for the king and don't wait for work day to pitch in and keep the place safe, neat, clean and organized.

Come one and all, this Saturday 1200.  It's time to choose your board and step up and volunteer to keep the club on course.  I've thrown my hat in for another year at the helm, thanks in advance for your support.

After the meeting we'll decorate the club, so bring along your leftovers and let's have some fun.

The HYC /Honolulu boat parade is the 9th of December and after several beers I've been coaxed into another year.  Sorry for the mess in the lawn, but the elves are making such great progress with their Elvis king theme it's hard for me to keep the dust down.  If you don't think you will decorate your boat and parade it, plan to be at HYC or Aloha tower and cheer for ILYC as we pass and review.  I've been corrected, it's not an anagram, it's a rebus, but I still I get some credit for original thought.  If you don't know what I'm talking about then you need to plan to come see the boat parade. I expect  there will be over 30 boats this year and it will be a great show.  There is also a no host buffet afterwards at HYC, and all the proceeds go to feed those less fortunate here in Hawaii.  A good cause, plenty of Christmas cheer, no reason not to attend!

Well the club is looking a little worse for the wear these days, I invite you to pick up a broom or a hose, give her a good sweep fore to aft, rinse the heads occasionally; throw the trash in the dumpster and put a fresh trash bag in the receptacle and so on.  The reason it's such a terrific place is the members, sharing all aspects of maintaining the club together.  This includes keeping the place safe, neat, clean and organized.

Tis' the season to travel and share good cheer, be safe out there.  I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and hope for those that can't be with us to return safely.

Seeyaonthewater,

Mike

Director of Activities

Willy Bethea

What a fantastic year, it's hard to believe it has come and gone already.

This year’s Christmas party will be held on the 16th of December at 6 pm. This is a pot-luck dinner; please sign you and your number of guests along with what side dish you are bringing on the board at the club. Example of a side dish, Corn on the Cob, Tossed salad, Fried Rice, (Charlie, Polly is not a side dish). The club will provide prime rib, baked potatoes, and beverages.

The Christmas present exchange for the party is limited to a minimum of $25.00. We will place all the gifts on a table after dinner and draw numbers to see who draws first through last. The exchange goes something like this.

Person #1 picks a gift, opens it, shows it, and sits down.

Person #2 has a choice to either take #1's gift or pick a gift, they must follow the same rules as stated before open it and show it and sit down.

Person #3 has the same choice except they can pick from any of the already opened gifts or pick a new gift. Same rules, open it, show it and sit down.

Person #4 follows suit but now the choices get more and more from here out.

When a person has a gift taken from them, that person has a choice to get a new gift, or, take some one else's gift. A gift may only be passed, stolen, taken, 3 times. After the third steal the present stays with that owner.

Last year this was a blast and every one seemed very happy with their presents and the joy that came with stealing them.

Dress Code,,,, yes even our little piece of paradise needs to look good this night. The dress code is,,,,,,, drum role,,,,,,,,,, casual.

I think this may be the longest article I have ever had to write.

Next we're planning a New Year’s Eve Pupu party. There will be a sign up for this at the club as well. The Pu pu party starts at 7pm with the arrival of the first pupu's. We need two people per hour to bring in a dish. This goes on till 11 pm which is when all the really heavy drinking starts and we get ready to welcome in the New Year. As always the club will provide some fine boxed champagne,,, I mean sparkling cider.

It's going to be a busy month. Please try and keep your calendars clear for the parties and elections and come down and join us for all the fun.

Last, this is it for me, it's been a very rewarding and enlightening position as your Activities Director. If it weren't for a few people at the club I would not have been able to pull off a few (ok most) of the events, a special thanks goes to Lori Cameron and Beth Snodgrass,  thank you for all your help and keeping me on track.

Your next Activities director will only be as good as you help them to be. That means helping with cooking, cleaning, prepping, and planning the events. This is a great club and we have the money to do some fun things but not every one can think of them like me,,,,,,,, ok so maybe poker wasn't everyone’s bag of chips.  The point is, help out whoever you select and let them know what you want to see,,,, and then help them make it happen.

Now, I'm off to where our last Activities Director ended up,,,,,,,that is Alaska. IS there something you're trying tell us all????

Thanks and Aloha

Willy

Vice Commodore

Louis Rogers

Aloha Members,

Turkey day has passed and as for me, I was stuffed as much as the bird.  On that note, the next big day of celebration is Christmas which is coming soon, but not before the next big event at the yacht club, which is the election of a new board of directors on Saturday December 2nd.  Remember, this is the one chance for you to exercise your privilege to vote for the candidates of your choice.

Mahalo to all that participated in this year's Sea Fest.  It was a fun day for everyone that came out to support the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association.  The food was good the weather was great and the dunking tank drew the largest crowd other than the live auction; and everyone enjoyed the hospitality that was shown to us at the Kaneohe Yacht Club.  Maybe next year we will even find a way to improve our support for such a worthwhile cause.

Once again, I would like to thank everyone for the support that you have given me during this year as Vice Commodore, and hope that you will continue to support the next vice during the coming year, and continue to support your club.  See you at the club this Saturday.

 Vice Commodore, Louis D. Rogers

Tony Snodgrass

Aloha Sailors,

The big events this month are the elections on Dec 2 and the Christmas party Dec 16.  We’ll need all hands for these two meetings!

The big events for November were the Inshore, Offshore and Overall winners in sailing.   Coconut Rhumb made a final flurry to the finish winning the last inshore race and 5 big points to finish third overall.  Puff and Jacaré ended the season tied in points with 16 but Puff wins the inshore on the tiebreaker of the most first place finishes.   The Offshore series came down to half a boat length between Puff and Jacaré with Puff pulling out the victory, winning the Offshore series and the Overall by just a couple of points. Congratulations Puff!

I’m working on small trophies for everyone who participated in races this year and will present them at the Christmas party—so come and enjoy our little corner of paradise.

All;

It has been a very good and busy year. New pier, excellent events both sail and power, and of course excellent club parties. As we wind down and get ready to elect a new board, please take the time to get to know the ones that are running and make sure you come out and vote. It is YOUR club and needs YOUR participation. I have had a very rewarding time as your Rear Commodore For Power this last year but will not be running for the post for next year. As for the future....who knows. Maybe year after next but I do have some very good memories now. Please take care and support OUR club.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and stay safe.

 Charlie

Secretary

Allan (sea story) Cameron

Well another year in paradise has all but come and gone.  It’s just about time to elect your new 2007 Board of Directors, those of our club that will guide us into and through the New Year.  There are still some very important issues out there affecting our little corner of paradise.  This year’s BOD (especially our Commodore and PC) had to make some serious decisions about the Fence, the Parking Lot, the Docks and not the least of all, our Lease with the landlord.  Next year, we again need to work on the Lease, the landlord continues to ask when the sheds are coming down, and they’ve even talked about taking down our separate bathroom building.  Your vote this Saturday will be for the people that will guide your club through these decisions, and maybe the most important decision, what and when are we going to do something about the now failing west pier.  Please come down to the club early and vote for the people you want to see guide us through the New Year.

Please while we all get caught up in trying to determine who is going to hold what position on the Board, don’t forget to thank your current Board members and those trying to gain a seat on the BOD.  As I’ve said so many times before in this forum, this is a participation club, we need the membership to participate, and those members who choose to volunteer their time to sit on our Board of Directors, whether or not they actually get elected, those people are participating.  Yes those of you that come to work days are also participating, and yes those of you that come down for the parties, and even the poker nights you too are participating, but it really does take a little bit extra to volunteer your time and to put your ego on the line and run for one of the Board of Directors offices.  I for one will thank each and every member that runs for an office at our elections on Saturday the 2nd of December, and I hope to see all of you there, if not to run for an office, then to participate by voting and selecting those who will hold those offices.

I’d like to give a great big thank you to Tony for putting on an absolutely great year of Sailboat racing.  With a little help from my friends (and especially my best friend, my wife Lori) Puff showed her racing pedigree most of the year.  Tim’s invaluable skills on a couple of races helped cement Puff’s final standing.  For anyone that didn’t hear, Tim called tactics in the last race of the year on Puff, as well as working the foredeck, trimming sails and anything else that could be done.  His tactics ensured Puff just barely, by one or two seconds, beat Jacare’ over the line.  He kept an eye on Jacare’ for the whole upwind leg, telling me which way to steer to keep Jacare’ just behind Puff in our dirty air so they could not get past us to weather.  He hoisted and ran the chute downwind, again calling tactics and letting me know which direction to steer to keep our chute out of Jacare’s dirty air.

Jacare’s owner/skipper and crew have come a long way in this last year and half.  I can recall when Tony and Beth first bought Jacare’ and I told them that their boat would be just as fast, if not faster than Puff…they both looked at me like I was crazy.  But the results are now there, Jacare’s the scratch boat in our little ILYC fleet, and it takes an extraordinary effort for any of us to beat them across the finish line.  But for the last race, the crew work, winds and sails made these two boats just about even, at least to within a couple of seconds.

And my final rant, is yet another thank you, this time to Beth for buying and organizing a great end of the sailing race season party.  As always there was more than enough wonderful food for everyone that attended.  Lots of sea stories and talking story for any and all to hear and tell.  A missing pie that eventually was found by one of the kids (leave it to a kid to find the pie).  And speaking of the kids, they too seemed to have a great day.  It was a wonderful way to end a great season of sailing and being around some of the best people in the islands.

THANK YOU!

Director of Facilities

Gary Sutton

Thanks to all of you for your support during the past year.  The club now has a more organized look

and should be much easier to maintain.  I ask for your support on election day as I will be running

for Facilities Director one more time. Please vote for Gary Sutton...  Thanks.... See you all at the

meeting..

 Aloha,  Gary

Staff Commodore

Tom Youngblood

As you might have heard/read election of 2007 BOD is high noon 2 Dec 2006.  Your presence and vote are needed. Many times in the past offices have been determined by one vote. No vote no grumble.

UH football team is a nationally ranked team.  Consider going to Rainbow by boat, get a guest slip, and tail gate at the pier/boat. Then a short walk to the game. No hassle parking a car or driving home. If you prefer you can drive to Rainbow. On game day they allow only military affiliated to park there. If interested talk to me or Mike for details.

It has been a good year for ILYC. i.e., new pier, new fence, parking lot in progress, and many new members.

Thanks to all the Board of Directors and members who made this a great year.

I think all will agree that the greatest contribution was made by Tim, our Port Captain.

Thanks to the board for letting me be the Staff Commodore.

Rusty's tips

Roaches on the boat -- or else where - Add a few ounces of beer to a jar which has a mouth which is smaller than the body such as a standard mason jar.  Apply cooking oil to the top inner surface of the jar/about an inch or so.  The beer acts as bait, the roaches enter the jar and can't get out. The dead ones can be removed with a spoon and the trap repositioned.
