Text Box: MEMBER NEWS CORNER (aka, yet another chance for me to gossip about you and your fellow club members……al)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Don’t forget, Heather Skubin’s Bouncing Baby Boy (BBB) is due in September and her BBB shower is coming up in a couple of weeks, Saturday August 18th at 1500
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Bob Benson is till looking for his “bent butts” (he claims this has something to do with fishing rods, sure Bob) these “bent butts” seem to have disappeared out of his locker after Gary cut the lock off because Bob forgot to put his name on the door of said locker; anyway Bob wants his “bent butts” back (something to do with fishing rods; right…)…
 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
And speaking of Bob’s, Bob Selig has let it be known that he is going to be at the chili-cook-off, get well Bob, we expect to see you at the CCO…
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
And speaking of showing up down at the club after a long absence, our own beloved Staff Commodore thinks he needs to come home soon. Tom has been back “home” in Texas handing out FEMA money to flood victims, but is expected to be back “home” here in Hawaii soon and should make an appearance at the club by CCO if not sooner…
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
September is going to have a few milestone birthdays. Wes turns the big 60, Charlie the even bigger 65 and Marcus rules the roost at 75. Come on down to the club on Sept 29th after the sailing race and help join in on the celebration…

Got some gossip you want to put in print or a birthday or anniversary you want to remind someone about, then tell Al (I’m now doing the town gossip thing), or if you want to ensure I get the fact straight, you can send me an e-mail…al

Aloha,

We are blessed with really some generous members; much Mahalo for all who stepped up for TRANSPAC this year, representing ILYC in such a fine fashion and hosting Skylark's captain and crew. I'm proud to serve with such a fine group.

Our lease has not yet been re-signed, we will execute a six month extension provided for in the current lease. Our landlord will have another look at finding a commercial company to manage the marina before signing later this year.

Since I was unable to attend the August meeting, I missed the discussion for the sink in the galley, there is lot's more to discuss on this so I'll move to re-visit this topic during the September meeting. Thanks to everyone who filled in during my absence.

If you have never traveled to Alaska, you are missing out.  It was a terrific visit.  Andy and Deb are looking forward to a coming back next year and I've got fishing stories to tell, Alaska is truly still a bit of a frontier.

Though it was fun, I'm glad to be back, enjoying the best boat club in these islands.

Seeyaonthewater,

Mike

Aloha all,

The races this season are really turning out some big crowds, we are averaging 5-6 boats on the start line and by ILYC standards that is a great turnout. The last race was a bit of a bust for the smaller boats, out of 6 starters 3 were forced back because of high seas. Of note is that after several consecutive good offshore postings Galia has overtaken Puff in the season offshore standings, look out Al. The next race will be an inshore race on Aug 11’th followed by the monthly offshore race on Aug 25’th. The Chili Cook Off and Labor Day weekend are fast approaching and that means that a Pokai Bay trip is in order. The trip will be Sep 1’st through the 4’th. I will post the sailing instructions in a separate e-mail. Joelle and I have mainland guests flying in and will arrive at Pokai on Sep 2’nd. So plan on getting some water under your boat, catching some fish, drinking a few beers, and bar-b-cueing an Ono or two. See you there.

Five Ono were brought in at the July Fishing Tournament. Kona Kai’s Ono barely beat out Rapnwill1’s Ono.  (Pictures of the fish are posted on the RC for Power bulletin board.)  The winning Ono tasted great in fish tacos.  Thanks to all for the side dishes and Rock for cooking and contributing his Mahi mahi!

Kona Kai and power-boat-Jason volunteered as “follow-me” boats for the Transpac. Unfortunately, they weren’t available when our boat was coming in.  Better luck next time.  We are taking a break now to focus on the Chili Cook-off.

What a wonderful club we have: just about everyone paid their slip fees on time; we have great new members joining; slips are full; bad guys that didn't pay or let their PH permit expire going to the mooring ball - yes!

Secretary

I want to thank everyone that worked on this year’s TRANSPAC team. Thanks to Mike Gathright, Paul Gaydos, and Jason Calvert (aka Power Boat Jason) for volunteering to perform the duties of “escort boat”.  Though as it turned out they spent a whole day hanging out at the Waikiki Yacht Club bar (tuff duty guys).  To Tony Snodgrass for signing up for a shift at the Diamond Head Lighthouse before having to fly off island on business (his shift was canceled, due to lack of boats).  To Meredith Vining, she made the boat lei for Skylark.  Her contribution really looked wonderful in the crew photos.  Dan Dubois for setting up our Host tables and chairs, climbing trees to hang our club banner outside the Hawaii Yacht Club balcony (okay, he did use a ladder to climb the trees), he also found emergency supplies (just in case the rest of the host team were late, which we almost were).  To Alicia Plevell, she stepped up a couple of times, first she bought all of the beer, soda and water (and she is still hoping that Charlie will eventually repay her) she was also our designated photographer, and those were some great photos Alicia.  Wes Beadle and Beth Snodgrass provided the first main course of our rather bizarre breakfast party, Gumbo with rice, Meatballs in BBQ suace, fruit plates, veggie plates, and a hoagie.  Beth also bought all the plates, napkins, bowls, cups, and plastic wear.  And not to be outdone in the food department was Louis, coming to the party fashionably late, he made some absolutely great ribs, beans and kabobs...in typical ILYC quantities I might add.  Even though Sue Fuller had other commitments and couldn’t make it down to HYC, the Mai Tais she made up in advance were a big hit (an assist here to Dan for serving, as well Rock, Wes and others).  Rock represented his BOD Activities Director position like a trooper, even though all the talk was about sailing and sailboats, the Rock weathered it all and was a true ILYC host.  And finally my wife, Lori stepped up yet again wherever and whenever I fell down (and I fell hard this year)....she made sure we had all the items on the Host Team shopping list accounted for (of course it was a shopping list she made up), and if anyone had work or other obligations, Lori found a work around.  And to all of you, everyone in our club, thank you all for supporting ILYC and this year’s TRANSPAC race.  We had people I consider new to the club, as well as old hands that have been around the club for more than a couple of years all participating and hopefully having a great time.  And the coups-de-gras as they say, was a request from the Skylark skipper and crew that ILYC be their hosts again in two years for the next TRANSPAC (though I’m not too sure we want to, as I never did receive an invitation from the owner or crew for a “thank you cruise” on Skylark, maybe Artemis will enter the race again next year).  Anyway, now it’s someone else’s turn, Lori and I have chaired this committee for four years (two TRANSPACs) it’s time for someone else

. to take over…step up and have some fun with it…

Oh, and if you’ve not gone up to the TRANSPAC web site, you should really check it out…there is a section off the front page on the right hand side for finish photos, they have two pages of great shots of Skylark crossing the finish line… http://www.transpacificyc.org/

Another fun month at the ILYC, boating, sailing, fishing, racing, feasting, enjoying the occasional beverage of choice and generally just having a good time. August brings us the Texas Hold'em tournament on the 18th. The sign-up roster will be posted as of the 4th. We will need a minimum of 8 players with a $55 buy in that includes pupus. There will be 3 places paid out. The tournament is open to members above 18yrs and 1 guest per family can be sponsored. I'm looking for Dealer volunteers, so if your interested please sign-up or contact me direct. General tournament rules are posted at the club on the "Power" board by the kitchen entrance, but if you need a web link just go to www.partypoker.com.  Pat AL on the back for a successful "Transpac" party. Remember to keep cleaning up after yourselves, leash your pets during food consumption and get out on the water. Aloha

Director of Facilities

Gary Harvell

Great workday this past Saturday, a lot of cleanup was accomplished in preparation for Chili Cookoff.  Many new faces showed up for workday and I’m glad to have the new and old members (that means you Wes).  Thanks to all who helped during the membership meeting on the 1st of August.  I brought up a proposal to change the Shed and Locker Policy and I rescinded the proposal at the time.  Currently all sheds are full..  There are lockers available to members who wish to use them.  I will be proposing to the Board, at the next meeting in September, a change to the locker and shed policy to allow only the use of one locker if you are currently in a shed and to allow non shed owners to use no more than two large lockers or three small lockers.  I will be presenting to the board a diagram of current shed/locker usage and the written changes to the shed and locker policy.

Again, thanks to all who came out for workday.  I hope to see you all at the Chili Cook-off and on the water soon as I get my boat back.

The vessel examiners of ILYC are available to do VE's with two of the three Coast Guard Aux guys on station and I plan to be back by September.  It would be nice to have one or two more members qualified, so talk to Roger to see the requirements of becoming a vessel examiner.

I was sorry to miss Transpac and I was especially looking forward to pulling two shifts at the finish line. Maybe next... no that would be year after next.

Sounds like our Facilities Director is getting a handle on sheds, unclaimed craft on the rack, and other junk.

I will say again as I always do before CCO that the best advertisement is to encourage your friends and neighbors to attend. Much work goes in to the event and a large crowd makes it more worthwhile.
