Commodore

Mike Vining

Aloha,

Great to see so many come out for Earl's celebration, the hurricanes are coming and Chili Cook-off is upon us.

Sure was great to see so many of you out enjoying the club this weekend, there was lot's of new interest from the other side and I think we even sold a boat and gained a member.  Thank you all who showed off the club in fine fashion, I was approached several times with comments from visitors saying how much they truly enjoyed their visit. We'll miss you Earl.

Daniel is fizzing out, but it was a wake up for me. I spent a few moments reviewing all the things we need to do to secure the club; I'll talk about it a bit during our August meeting and ask for help developing a heavy weather check list.  Once we have this posted, whomever can come down 96-72 hours and closer will be able to reference this for what needs to accomplished.

Chili Cook-off countdown, 40 days and lots to do.  See Louis for assignments, mark your calendars for 8-10 September and invite your friends.

One last round - new dock carts have been procured. Thank your generous port captain. Use and enjoy, please return these to the head of the pier when your done loading and unloading - 60 lbs is about the maximum these can handle.

Mike

RC for Sail

Tony Snodgrass

Wow—just too much was going on this month to get two races in.  The inshore race took place on 15 July and had only three boats.  Jacaré took first place followed two minutes behind by Puff and Coconut Rhumb was four minutes off the pace after a time correction.

Several of our racers turned out for our last goodbye to Earl Reid.  The service was punctuated with full military honors, a burial at sea and a party the Earl would have been proud of.  The club gave a good showing and Earl’s son and his family enjoyed the day.  Thanks for everyone that showed up and helped out.

Finally, this weekend looks like it might be consumed with our first tropical storm in many years and possibly a fishing tournament.  If you haven’t been down to secure your boat and everything on it, please do so before Friday.

Next month is going to be just as busy.  Several of us are racing Jacaré in the Kauai Channel Race on Aug 4.  There will be an inshore race on Aug 12 and an offshore on Aug 19.

See you in our little corner of paradise!

Tony

Aloha Club Members.

As we head into another month I would like all to reflect on the last seven months at the club.  We have accomplished quite alot, done alot of work, lost a good friend and comrade, and gained numerous new members.  As we continue to grow we must keep in mind that we ARE a family oriented club and courtesy and respect are paramount.  Take the time to help each other when you can and look out for each other and their boats.  We have a good club so lets keep it that way.

On another note, there will be another fishing tourney around the 26th of August.  I will get with the RC for Sail and maybe we can arrange two events for the same time.  Maybe off-shore race and fishing.  I know the fuel prices are going up but ask that if you can participate, please do.  I will send out the rules, which will be the same as last month, the first or second week of August.  Please stay safe and active in YOUR club.

Port Captain

Tim DuBois

It has been a quiet month for the Port Captain, I expect to do only minor maintenance on the old pier this workday and repair/add some additional anchors to the new pier. We have new dock carts thanks to the Commodore and a screw up at west marine, so please take care of them and don't overload them with extra heavy items. If you need to move batteries, large amounts of fuel, or engine blocks use one of the OLD carts. Just a reminder no dock boxes on the new dock.

Looks like Tropical Storm Daniel is going to die a quiet death without bringing too much havoc to the islands. Got lucky this time but everyone should be thinking about what is needed to protect your family, your boat, and your club.

Treasurer

Charlie Crews

OK, not much in the Treasurer's corner so thought I would pass on a conversation heard on channel 69 last Saturday.

First Security Boat - Look at what is coming out of the lagoon - Kalaukia.  Think there may be a boat hijacking in progress?

Second security boat - Probably.  But there is a grey patrol boat in pursuit behind it.

So, are there "Pirates of the Lagoon"?  Nope, something more rare - Bob Benson and Charlie Crews were both underway!  Yes, that's right.  Charlie and Bob were underway to see their old friend Earl off.  Charlie even had a jib up (and motor OFF!) coming back from the scattering of Earl's ashes.

Racers - beware.

Aloha,

Charlie Crews 672-8559

Secretary

Allan (rant & rave) Cameron

Not much going on that is all that newsworthy as far as my Secretarial duties are concerned…illness kept me away from the July board and general membership meetings (I think that may have been the first time I missed a club meeting in over two years) but thankfully my partner in oh so many ways, Lori stepped up and filled in for me…though I did hear about my minutes taking from her…anyway, thank you Lori for covering in by absence.  Well I’m going to veer off course, as I’m apt to do from time to time and venture over into the RC for Sail’s world.

Tony, Beth and Jason found some good boat speed on Jacare’ for July’s Inshore race, and put Jacare’ out in front of Lori and I on Puff and stayed there for almost the entire Inshore race…on the first crossing tack, I tried to pin them inside West Loch, but they had the boat speed to just cross in front of us.  On the next crossing tack I was expecting to slip by them but I didn’t have the boat speed to cross in front, so I tried a lee bow tack.  I actually pulled that maneuver off and put Puff just barley in front, but to the lee of Jacare’s bow.  And when I say just in front, I mean just in front, as Puff was accelerating out of the tack Jacare’s bow pulpit came up and was all but overhanging Puff’s stern pulpit… Puff was blowing dirty air into Jacare’s sails slowing her down, but now Puff was pinned against the east side of the Waipahu peninsula, and alas I couldn’t deal with sailing in those close quarters, especially when I heard “turn right, no your other right” as Jacare’ again closed in on Puff’s stern…this time when Jacare’ had to back off (or run us over) I bailed out and tacked away, for the rest of the race I was chasing Jacare’s stern.  More importantly Jacare’ won the race and is now tied for 1st Place in the Inshore Series.  They moved into second place overall, leaping over Tim and Joelle on Coconut Rhumb.

For each and everyone in the club, there is a race out there just waiting for you…Ladyhawke should be coming into our little racing fleet soon.  I expect Coconut will be her first target adversary…the Catalina 22’s, Rose, Doghouse, Ealu you could all fight it out amongst yourselves or take the fight to a couple of bigger boats, Ambience and Terre Moana should be giving Moonrunner a run for her money...Sun Tui, Flying Fish…some of the new boats that have not yet come out sailing…we’d love to see you guys come on out to the club “races”, everyone can join in the fun…remember it’s not about wining every week, it’s about having fun with your fellow club members.  These “races” are all about sailing with friends and having fun.  You too should come on down and have some fun.  We do this every month, twice a month, except in December, weather permitting, of course we don’t like getting wet, or when the wind is blowing too hard, or when there is not enough wind…oh hell we go when it’s fun...fun, fun, fun…end of rant

Director of Activities

Willy Bethea

For us North Westerners, this little wind we have coming is just another day, but for people who live in paradise, it could be a disaster. Please take the time to secure things around the club and your home. A couple things that I’m concerned about are my kids kayak, our lawn furniture at home, our canoe and my newly acquired shed; I don’t think it will survive 50kt winds.

For all our new members, “welcome aboard the best Yacht Club on the Island”. This place is getting better and better every week. Right now we’re working on getting some cable TV brought in so we can watch some Monday night foot ball and also get ready for the big games, we’re going to hang the TV so that it is up and out of the way and give us all a little more room to move around.

There is going to be a lot of work that needs to be done for the Chili cook off. If you have the time please get up with our Vice Commodore, Louis, and see what he needs for help. We’re going to need some trucks to haul tables and chairs, bouncy houses, shade tents, etc. The gig may be on the 9th of September but a lot will have to be done the day before and the day after so please jump in and help out.  For those of you who have not been to the Cook off before, it’s one great time, good food, lots of fun for the kids, entertainment, sailboat races, dingy races,,,,,,and my favorite, chili and beer.

Last for activities, at the next club meeting I’m going to suggest that we have a quarterly dance. I had a fantastic time at Earl’s memorial with the live band, good food and new friends. I think it’s something we should do on a regular basis, ( the party and new friends, not the memorial part), and I would like to try and get other clubs to participate as well so we might be able to steal a few members away from them and also get some help paying for the entertainment.

As always, stay safe, and lets have some fun.

Willy

Director of Facilities

Gary Sutton

Great job on the past few workdays.  The club areas and clubhouse are looking much better these days (thanks to all the hard work on the past few workdays).  I thank all of you who showed up. B-Z   We still have projects to accomplish before the Chili Cookoff.

I'll start posting these jobs on the facilities board by the soda machine.  See you at the next workday (August 5th)

  Aloha,

Gary Sutton

I will be available for VE’s most of the time in the next month or so. Give me a call or see me at the club for immediate gratification.

ILYC was a good host for member Earl’s send off. Thanks to the members who showed their aloha even though many of you did not know him that well.

RUSTY'S TIPS

Tropical Storm Daniel may have blown itself out but it’s our wake up call for things to come… Now is the time to make sure your boat is secure with adequate lines. Our storm season is here and when or if a storm gets close to Oahu we may have to muster the members to secure the club. If you have anchors aboard your boat it would not hurt the put them out and take some strain on them to lessen the load on the pier anchors. In particular those boats moored on the east side of the piers.  Also prior to a storm approaching please remove items that increase your “sail” area.  Anytime winds will be above 40 knots, sun awnings and the like will beat your boat up, along with your neighbors as these tear loose, not to mention the added strain to the pier anchors and hardware.  This is for both power and sail boats alike.  Whatever you can do to reduce what the wind can catch, will save you and your neighbors many headaches.  Take sails off the boom and off roller furling.  Remove biminis, dodgers and other soft tops, even tonue covers, winch covers (these will just disappear) and wheel covers.  Please Stand by for a big FART (Fast Action Response Team), if needed we will call and ask for anyone that can, to come down to the club if there are problems.  We seem to okay for now…but please let’s all plan ahead and starting thinking about what we can do in the future.
