Aloha,
It can't rain forever - that's what I
keep telling myself. Mark your calendars, our ribbon cutting for the pier
repair with social to follow will be 1 April, come rain or shine. We will begin
at 0800 and I expect we finish by 1400ish. This will be your new activities
director first hurrah so come on down and support this event. The rubbish
removal/demo of the old pier material will be 5,6,7 May using an excavator on
the west end of the lagoon. We'll be staging and setting up on Friday the 5th
and working both Saturday and then on Sunday as required.
I know the weather has been quite wet,
and may cause you to stay away from the club, but it's times like this when
it's important that you do come down and check on your boat - remember there are
no paid staff in our club to watch after your property. Your bilge can
accumulate water; the power circuit breaker may trip on your pier, and the next
thing you know after your battery has run dead, you'll be fixing water
damage... Unfortunately, some non-members this past week let themselves
into the club grounds, and onto "abandoned" boats and absconded with electronics
and other valuables.
Come down regularly, or have another
club member check on your boat, your presence at the club helps deter folks
from helping themselves to your property. If you encounter someone you
don't recognize in the club, challenge them and ask their name - you might meet
a new member, or help to escort out those that do not belong. HPD
has law enforcement jurisdiction, so be sure to file a police report should you
experience trouble, and at the same time please notify a board member so we can
get the word out to all the members.
On a lighter note I have reason to
believe it won't rain forever, plan to be at the club 0800 1 April and we'll
celebrate spring, the new pier, and Andy and Willy's change of watch.

Hello all,
I wanted to give you a little primer on handicapping in
yacht racing. A new handicap system
called Americap II is replacing the old PHRF system. The new system works along the lines of the
chart below. Each yacht is measured off
a reference yacht—in this case Puff is the reference boat. Puff’s speed—in seconds per mile—is measured
along the bottom axis. Each boat is
given a difference per mile along the vertical axis. The equation of the resulting line provides
the handicapping system.

For the race held in March, Moonrunner finished with a time of 5393
seconds while Coconut Rhumb finished with 5618 seconds. When you take these finish times multiplied
by the slope of the line and subtract the Y-intercept times the distance of the
race you get the handicap for each boat.
For the race, these times came to 595 and 824, respectively. Thus the corrected time was 4798 for
Moonrunner and 4794 for Coconut Rhumb—Coconut won by 4 seconds.
Here are the results for the year.

Wow,,,,how
time flies. It seems like only yesterday when Andy was telling me about this
great deal for a Catalina 22, I definitely have some big shoes to
fill. I wanted to try and plan a going away party for Andy but with such a
short time frame it won’t be possible, so, I hope each of you will take some
time to go down to his wreck, I mean motor boat and wish him the best, he
drinks Coors Light and Rum,,,go figure.
As the new fun guy, I’ll do my best to fill the void left
by Captain “Q”. As most of you know, I try and do what I can for the club, it’s
the best hang out on the island and the members are the cream of the crop when
it comes to friendship. We have some big projects to finish, a ribbon cutting
ceremony for the new pier, and then the fun stuff; fishing tournaments and a
sailboat races. All of which I will be looking forward to having big pot luck
dinners afterwards, with a little help from each of you. As in the past, the
club will provide the big ticket items and then we members can fill in with the
small stuff, salads, desserts, favorite dishes, etc. Unfortunately the fresh

Andy, thanks for the friendship, the great
and wonderful food and the expert advice.
I for one am going to miss you, Deb and the Nautical Girl. Hopefully someday in the future our paths
will again cross. Good Luck in
everything you do, and may the wind always fill your sails.
Andy and Deb were (and are) true members of
this club. Every time I saw Deb at the
club she was helping clean, cook or lending someone a hand at something,
anything. She embodied the word
participation; always friendly and always there to help. Andy too will be missed by all. He helped with every project, from fixing the
buildings, piers, and boats, to cooking up some of the most fabulous food. Andy taught this crusty old rag man that not
all stink potters are bad…and they might have some good tricks to teach even an
old dog like me.
But before I get too maudlin about our
departing friends, I need to welcome Willy to the BOD. For anyone that hasn’t heard (or read
elsewhere in this newsletter) Willy Bethea will be taking over from Andy as the
new club Activities Director. Yes Willy
you’ve got some big shoes to fill, but you and Shelly are off to a wonderful
start. Like and Andy and Deb the two of
you are always there for the club. Willy
I think I’ve seen you at every work day, both regular and pier construction work
days for all of this year, and most of last.
And Shelly is by your side, if she’s not stuck in that silly call center
on base. Thank You for stepping up to
the plate and taking a shot at helping this club continue to grow...
Once again this month we’ve got a fairly
basic newsletter…no tips or secrets to make your boating life easier or
faster…no special recipes to share with friends…and no new ads for the ditty
bag. Remember people this is your
newsletter, it is what you want to make of it…so please get me your articles,
your tips on maintenance, or “go fast” tricks, or recipes, or just a fun story
you heard or experienced…I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, if you
want my help writing an article, telling a story or just passing on information,
sit down with me at the club some weekend, and we’ll put pen to paper and come
up with something. You all know I can
talk, and I’m even willing to listen…on occasion…and the more you all write the
less room there is for me to rant on, and on, and..

common editorial sense

time to complete the job. April 1st is the day and 0800 is the time.
The next ILYC work day is April 8th but
if you make the pier work day I'll get you an April work chit.

ILYC RESIDENT CARETAKER POLICY
To safeguard the security of the club and members
boats, the Board may appoint a maximum of 2 resident caretakers (one each
pier). The resident caretakers shall have the following responsibilities:
1. Perform a minimum of twice daily security
inspections of the club grounds and piers
2. Empty the trash cans as required and move the
dumpster in & out for pick-up
3. Ensure the heads are kept properly supplied
4. Other duties and restrictions as prescribed by the
Board of Directors
In exchange, the resident caretaker may live aboard
their boat as long as they comply with the following:
1. Resident caretaker shall be a full member of the
club in good standing
2. Boat shall be able to get underway, and shall
demonstrate said ability to a Board member on a monthly basis
3. An additional monthly fee of $200 shall be
paid by the resident caretaker
4. Maximum 2 people living on board (Member and 1 dependent,
both min. 18 years old)
5. All black water thru hulls shall be secured shut
by the vessel owner, and inspected by the Port Captain, and may be inspected
with no prior notice by any member of the Board
6. No pets will be allowed
7. Resident caretaker shall notify the Board of any
absences of over 72 hours
The intent of this policy is to have a visible, 24-
hour presence at the club to deter trespassers. The Resident caretaker assumes
no liability for club or members’ property. The appointment of the resident caretaker
may be revoked by a majority vote of the membership.
*** This policy SHALL NOT be misconstrued as authorizing
live-a-boards at ILYC. ***
The Last Word – Security (Al’s on a Rant again)
For those of you that voted against the new
Resident Caretaker policy (which passed for those of you that were not at the
last Meeting), I hope your boat was not one that was broken into this last
weekend…unfortunately there was some vandalism and valuable electronics and a
generator were stolen (that we know of).
In my not so humble opinion this is exactly why we needed this new resident
caretaker policy. We need a resident
caretaker living on their boat, and two resident caretakers would be twice as
good. Without paid staff for our club,
especially security, this is the best way I know how to add security to our
facility.
I also want to echo Commodore Mike’s words
about questioning people at the club who you don’t know. I know it’s a little weird asking people you
don’t know who they are and if they’re members. I’m sure many of you have had me ask you those
very questions…it’s how I’ve gotten to know most of you in person rather then
by e-mail. Again, ILYC can not afford
paid staff or security, we the membership have to police the facility
ourselves. If you run across someone who
is not a member and won’t leave just by your asking, call the police, HPD…don’t
try to throw them out on your own.
Without getting off on a tangent too
far…speaking of Policing…how about emptying the trash cans once in awhile…I
swear every time I come down to the club the tables are a mess, the trash is
overflowing from two or three cans and there is junk scattered all about. There are members who spend the first ten to
twenty minutes cleaning up every time they come down to the club…now back to my
regularly scheduled rant about Security.
If you are down at the club, at any hour of
the day or night YOU are the ILYC security.
This is a member participation organization, if you won’t do it, what
makes you think anyone else is going to..??..!!
We are all responsible for each others property. If you take care and respect everyone else’s
property, they in turn will respect and care for yours. Unfortunately the adverse applies, if you
disrespect others or their property, you will probably see disrespect right
back at you. But I prefer to stick to
the positive, this is our club and we all need to stick together and take care
of each other.
We know not everyone the security gate guards
let into the housing area are upstanding members of society. There is way too much crime in our society,
we just need to try and keep it outside the gates of our club…Big Al
Would
somebody please let the Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore for Sail, Rear Commodore
for Power, Port Captain and Staff Commodore know that we really want to see The Arrow articles from them as well…
