MANSFIELD BARE BONES REPORT

Wow, What Wind!

The 11th Bare Bones Regatta was held this past weekend at the Mansfield Sailing Club.  The weather report for the last few days leading up to it was not looking good at all.  Everybody was calling for thunderstorms and lots of rain.  Saturday dawned with cloudy skies and storms off to our Southwest, but boats were rolling in to the club and it hadn’t rained yet.  Originally the plan had been to run the 1st race and then break for lunch, but with threatening weather near it was decided at the skippers  meeting to have lunch first and then get as many races in before conditions deteriorated.  The first race got under way about 1:30 in a puffy, shifty southwesterly breeze with everyone fighting to keep the boats on their feet.  We managed to get in 2 more races after that and the rain held off  till the last leg of the 3rd race.  And we never did get those thunderstorms.  Saturday night the usual party was happening at the Varley Valley that included a boat burning as an offer to the Wind Gods.  It worked to say the least.  Sunday saw an increase in wind speed, the puffs and shifts also seemed to increase dramatically.  Two more races were ran on Sunday, so we got our 5 races in for the Regatta and never did see any of those thunderstorms the weather folks called for.  Jim Taylor dominated the Regatta with 5 bullets followed by Eric Brandt, Bill Buckles and Kurt Andrews (see results).  On behalf of the Mansfield Sailing Club I would like to thank  the 7 out-of-town boats that made the trip for making our Regatta a success.  And also, thanks to all our own members for their efforts in pulling off another successful Bare Bones Regatta.  Thank you all.

bulletThe Wind Shift was a great event this year.  The wind came directly down the lake from 5 to 15 knots and was pretty steady for Leatherlips.  James Taylor won the event followed closely by Tom Varley and Kurt Andrews.  For Pictures of the teams please see the results.  Dinner was good and the after event festivities were as always fun.

bulletSeveral Ohio Boats sailed in the Burl Harmon Memorial Indiana Open Regatta regatta May 6th and 7th. Mike Brock, Dick Pugh, Tom Varley, Kurt Andrews, Eric Brandt and James Taylor attended the event.  It was an absolutely beautiful weekend with sunny skies and winds from 3 to 15 knots from every direction on the compass.  This was a great way to start the season, the wind was not too much nor too little, and very variable.  The hospitality is always great here with a large new deck and a great steak dinner Saturday Night.

Eric Brandt with Becky Young and Stan Fuller sailed a very consistent regatta placing 5th after throwing out a PMS in the 5th race.

After the first day and four races William Hofmeister was winning with 4 seconds, a team of juniors practicing for the Youth worlds was Second (The "Kids" was there nickname on out boat) and James Taylor was in third (1,1,12,5). The first race on Sunday brought 5 to 10 knots with 10 to 15 degree wind shifts. The "Kids" won the race followed closely by James and William Hofmeister in 6th. So it was now down to the last race to determine the champion. During the first attempted start of the last race James was T-Boned just behind the port lower.

This start was general recalled giving James time to work on his boat. Lots of Duck tape later and he decided to start the Race. After all that James sailed off to a first place and won the regatta.  Please check the results but I believe 5 of the 6 Ohio boats were in the top 10.  Here is a picture of the winners - James Taylor with crew Nate and Bridget Ireland.
