As the saying goes….“You’ve come a long way, Baby”! And since 1995, the Hawaii Women’s Yacht Racing Association has been sharing the gift of sailing to others. This year is no different. We’ve changed our course slightly to do some “Kids Over Board” drills, so to speak.
We are going out to the community to share this awesome sport to our younger Keikis here in Oahu. There is a great need for the older generation of sailing women to get out and become a Big Auntie to our children of Hawaii.
One of our great stories of community support comes from our very own member and 2008 Commodore Captain Ann Ford. She has help lead the Waianae Youth Sailing Program for “at risk” high school kids since 2008. Along with other volunteer members, every Saturday, kids get the opportunity to learn how to sail. One of the great learning experiences is when these kids get to crew on a race. This happen last year, when Ann took two girls on their first small boat race at Hickam Harbor and they won first place on the Greenhow Regatta. What a way to keep a regatta alive and see kids now enjoy truly a wonderful sport.
HWYRA would like to continue to offer these kids support by insuring they have monies needed to participate in sailing classes; race regatta’s; yacht club membership; junior sailing tuition, and so forth.
No one should be left behind do to financial inabilities. If we as a club, can support this need, we have done a great service to our community and to the sport of sailing. Our funds will be ear-marked for distribution as a tuition based scholarship for low income children.
Your donation/membership will truly support this wonderful need. And if you are around town, please take the time to spend a day with these awesome kids and get wet with them. There is nothing better than enjoying the ocean with our future generation at the helm.
