Appendix A: Rabbit Start – (also known as Gate Start) is used where we have no Race Committee boat. In this start, a “rabbit” is chosen according to a schedule or at the pre-race skippers meeting as the official Starter. The rabbit drops a Yellow Flag floating buoy (X mark) in the vicinity of the ideal location for a starting line for the chosen course and uses a 3-minute count down watch to time the sequence. Starters have to start to start (a) on starboard tack, (b) between the rabbit’s transom and the fixed buoy (X mark), after a timed starting sequence. I
I.
Sequence
of events leading to the Rabbit Start:
A. The Rabbit and all Sailors position
themselves near the Starting Mark (all boats are usually sailing within close
distance from each other and the starting mark at this time).
·
The Rabbit ensures that as many
sailors are nearby the Starting Mark as possible before beginning the starting
procedure. However, racing will NOT
be delayed for boats not in the starting area for the Start.
·
Sailors are responsible to stay
within “hearing distance” from the Rabbit.
B. The Rabbit signals
(using a whistle) all sailors about the start:
·
the preparatory (3 minutes) – a sequence of several short whistle
blows followed by one or more loud hailing “three minutes”
·
the warning (1 minute) – one long whistle followed by one or more loud
hailing “one minute”
·
Other competitors must continue on
starboard tack until they have cleared the “line”; that is, between the Rabbit’s transom and the fixed buoy.
|
|
Finishing using a Rabbit Start:
C.
Boats finish by passing the Start/Finish mark (X mark) on Port and by
either Crew or Shipper touching it at the Finish. Touching the mark is a visual
aid for other competitors demonstrating proper finish.
·
The boat must record its finish by
place and time (using the stopwatch).
·
If two boats finish simultaneously,
or near each other, so as not to be a clear winner, then both boats are awarded
the higher of the two places in contention.
d.
All boats must record their finish and report it to their fleet captain
and the Rabbit (the Starter) at the end of each race. It shall also hand-over
all its scores to the Starter at the end of the race day or no more than 30
minutes after docking.
E. Special Rules in effect for
Rabbit Starts:
1. The Rabbit’s start is approximate; there are no penalties for the
Rabbit being reasonably late or early to the fixed buoy.
2. The Rabbit has right of way over all other boats until the start and 30
seconds after the start or until he makes his first tack onto starboard
(whichever is shorter); any boat interfering with the Rabbit must do a 360, when
directed by the Rabbit.
Location of LaDue Reservoir: (Geauga County, OH, at the intersection of OH Rt. 44 and Rt. 422.)
Attachment A
Racing Area

Marks are white PVC cylinders, floating with about 2-1/2’ showing above water. PVC Marks are designated "N" (North), "S" (South), "E" (East), and "W" (West) on the map, but are not designated ON the mark itself. The only PVC cylinders floating in the lake are Marks. There are also Temporary Marks- floating flags.
There is a shoal (shown red) that is directly on the S to E rhumbline, it is about 10 feet in diameter. This shoal should only be a problem when the water is low enough that the area off the "beach" (left of the launching ramp) is actually dry. If dry- sail left or right of the shoal, where there is plenty of water.
The launch ramp leads to a dredged channel. To the SOUTH of the ramp (right, facing the lake) there is an old road that is less than 12" under water; to the left there is a large, shallow area that is soft mud and weeds, about 2-3’ deep unless the water is very low.
