SAILING Announces 2008 Schedule
of U.S. National Championships
US SAILING has determined its
2008 schedule for Adult and
Youth National Championships.
The 17 events, which began in
January and continue through
September, will be hosted by
sailing organizations across the
country and raced in a wide
range of classes of boats. From
fleet, match and team racing to
one design, offshore and
disabled sailing, the
Championships offer fierce
competition for sailors of all
ages. Most of the events also
provide advanced racing clinics
for the competitors. The US
SAILING Championships are
sponsored nationally by Rolex
Watch U.S.A., LaserPerformance,
Chubb Group of Insurance
Companies, Nautica, and Dry
Creek Vineyard.
While some participants are
selected by sailing resume, the
course to the majority of
Championships is either open or
based on a ladder structure that
begins at the local club level
and progresses to regional
finals before reaching the
National Championship.

Mike Zuteck |
US SAILOR of The Week - Mike
Zuteck
"I didn't know much about racing
but I liked to sail fast," Mike
Zuteck says of his time growing
up in the Detroit area. So when
he got accepted to MIT,
naturally he tried out for the
sailing team. His technical mind
quickly worked out the geometry
of racing and he excelled. He
graduated from MIT and moved to
Texas and discovered the Tornado
on Galveston Bay. He thought,
"this is fast," and bought one
with his first paycheck. That
impulse purchase lead to four
Olympic campaigns, which
produced mixed results and
unbelievable challenges, but
Mike takes it all in stride.
"Adversity tests how much you
really want something," he says,
after recounting each campaign's
havoc ranging from crew
illnesses to equipment
breakdowns to his own
injuries...

Hot International Competition at
the Acura Miami Grand Prix
There was
no slam dunk choice for the Boat
of the Week honoree at the 2008
Acura Miami Grand Prix,
sanctioned by US SAILING. That's
because all four classes were
hotly contested throughout the
regatta, which finished last
Sunday. Colm Barrington and his
crew aboard Flash Glove
counted all first and second
place finishes and did not need
to sail the final race en route
to winning IRC 1 class in
convincing fashion. Andy Fisher
skippered Bandit to a
hard-earned victory in IRC 2,
which had four different leaders
over the course of the four-day
regatta. Michael Illbruck and
the Pinta team led at
the end of each day in the
Melges 32. Ultimately, the
three-part criteria that
officials with Premiere Racing
used to select the Acura Trophy
winner favored the Farr 40
Barking Mad, owned by Jim
Richardson of Newport, RI.,
which won three of 10 races and
overcame some double-digit
results.
