                                                                     November 2008

From the Rear Commodore - Pat Leonardo

Boo! Screech Scream!  Hope everyone, especially our youngest sailors, enjoyed a Scary Halloween. Now to more serious business…Our Sailing Committee has met and we can report the following:

Work Day - Dark clouds, cool weather and storm threats did not deter a daring group of 37 undaunted workers from accomplishing their tasks – the boats rest comfortably near the fireplace and the docks enjoy the fresh air in the yard. Our work day ended and all is well. Thanks to all who generously gave their time including:

Lynn Brady, Norb Chehak, Harry Chaikin, David Gaffney,  Sarah Chaikin, Bob and Carol Leiz, Mary Beth Moffa, Nancy and Derrick Owings, Marc Seidenberg, Joe Tedeschi, Stan Cwiklinski, Deb and Howard Schlessinger, Diane and Dennis Faherty, Papa John Keating, John Gibbons, Ken Deitz, John Rozsa, Joe Corter, Steve Donohue, John and Sue Ferguson, Dave Miller, Anthony and Deb Carchidi, Bud Eitner,  Moss and Judy Jackson and our volunteer lads from St. Augustine Prep - Nick Moffa, Andrew Moffa, Elliot Coyne, James Johnston, Drew Barkoff.

Everyone did a great job and we appreciate your time and effort. A few boats remain orphans – no one yet has claimed them. If you think you own one of these boats, please contact me and we can discuss options. The season has ended for our St. Augustine and Mainland Sailors, so we put away the 420’s and will soon raise the ramp and keep it in its winter hibernation.

Instructors – My talks with our 2008 staff suggests that we may need to fill a few shoes for the upcoming year.  Anyone interested in working as an instructor next summer needs to contact me ASAP.

In order to provide additional certified instructors for the coming years, we have asked the US Sailing Organization to offer their program over two weekends in the Spring – April 25-26 and May 2-3. Prior to these dates, we will offer on-the-water small boat instruction to those students who have their license but need this real water experience to pass their US Sailing certification. Also, students need to show proficiency in life saving skills/CPR. Again, contact me ASAP if you are interested in taking this course.

Boats/Equipment – I have been assured that our motor boats will be wrapped and winterized within the week. Meanwhile, I have tentatively ordered a new inflatable hull & tube on which we can attach the console and motor from our Rio Tecna boat that is currently getting patched. BYC will NOT pay for either repairs or the new boat. McLaughlin Marine and the Prep will share the costs.

We will have more to report after our next meeting in January. Until then, CIAO.
