Brigantine Yacht Club Enjoys Summer’s Last Hurrah
Brigantine Yacht Club began the last official weekend of summer with its annual Labor Day weekend golf outing. This year's competition was won by the team of Lou Virelli, Chris Virelli, Skip Speckman and Dick Ford with a score of 9 under. After the round of golf, the foursomes returned to the BYC for the Ford / Branco families’ sumptuous roast beef sandwich dinner, awards and socialization.
On Saturday, BYC sailors turned out for the Labor Day regatta. The competitors ranged in age from age three to “mature’ and included children who, after a summer’s instruction, sailed in their first race. Threatening storms failed to develop, and in spite of the shifty, light winds, the fun continued from mid morning through the afternoon. Winning awards for the “C” (novice) sailors in the Optimist class were: 1st place - Jack Corbett, 2nd Place - Jacob Hoffman, 3rd Place - Sean O'Connor; in the “B” (intermediate) division was: 1st Place - Cobe Wiggins, and 2nd Place - Annemarie Branco; and in the “A” (advanced) Optimist division was: 1st Place - Ellie Corbett. 2nd Place resulted in a tie between Margot Murray and her cousin Connor Murray. Winning awards in the two-person boat group were: 1st Place - Claire Corbett, skipper and Marissa Murray, crew who beat out Marissa’s parents (3rd place) Brian and Chris Murray. Brian and Chris were unable to prevail even with three-year-old Lauren Murray participating on their crew. 2nd Place was won by Dave and Karen Gaffney, skipper and crew, and 4th Place – Norb Chehak, skipper with Sarah Chaikin , crew. The sailing fun ended with just enough time for everyone to prepare for the club’s Saturday evening events.
The Yacht Club was full nearly to bursting on Saturday evening for the traditional Labor Day weekend Covered-Dish dinner. After sampling dozens of tasty dishes, the club membership settled down for its annual awards night. Sailing awards were as follows:
Ø Outstanding Boy Sailor for 2008 - Tyler Nemsdale, who has successfully competed in races both within the Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Association and the Long Beach Island Sailing Association.
