| In 1955, the Southern Massachusetts Yacht Racing
Association, the Maine Yacht Racing Association, the Narragansett Yachting Association,
and the Yacht Racing Union of Massachusetts Bay formed the New England Yacht Racing
Council. The prime function of the Council was to conduct the Area Semi-Finals for the Sears, Adams, and Mallory Finals. The members of the Council jointly donated the Area trophy for the Sears and called it the New England Yacht Racing Council Trophy which is emblematic of the New England Junior Championship. In 1996 Frederick D. "Ted" King, past President of NEYRC and former Chairman of the National Junior Championships Committee, died and his friends and family donated a trophy to replace the NEYRC Trophy for the winner of the Area A Semi-Finals for the Sears Cup, US Junior Sailing Championship.
