| Charles Francis Adams reigned as "Dean of American
Helmsmen" from 1920 as skipper of the America's Cup defender RESOLUTE until his death
in 1954. He enjoyed sailing small boats as well as Cup defenders, but his greatest
enjoyment was the challenge of a good race. Following his death, the Southern
Massachusetts Yacht Racing Association, the Maine Yacht Racing Association, the
Narragansett Bay Yachting Association, and the Yacht Racing Union of Massachusetts Bay
jointly placed into competition the Charles Francis Adams Memorial Trophy to be awarded
annually to the New England Senior Champion. |
