Fleet Captain: Pete Pierce
What is the WLYC Laser Fleet?
The Weatherby Lake Laser Fleet has been the largest one-design
fleet on the lake for the past 10 years. We're mostly a racing
fleet with heavy emphasis on bringing the new sailors along in
a low pressure, fun atmosphere. Many the sailors in the fleet
are new, however the best competition in the Midwest is also found
right here at Weatherby Lake. We have A level, B level, and Junior
level in our fleet. After the races, we meet on C-Point for refreshments
and post race chat!
I've hardly sailed
much less
raced!
No problem! Many of the sailors this year are new sailing adults
or graduating Junior Sailors. We have 'A/B' race days, where the
A fleet sailors help the B fleet sailors by (1) loaning their
boats to non-Laser owners, of (2) coach from a power boat during
the B race.
You mean, I could try it without
even owning a Laser?
Yes! Come out for an 'A/B' race day and an A fleet member will
loan his/her boat to you for one of the B races. It wouldn't hurt
to call one of the above people in advance to ensure we look for
you!
Am I too little to sail a Laser?
Laser sailors' weights range from 65 to 220 lbs. Ideal weight
is 170 lbs. Some of the smaller sailors either take a crew along
or 'reef' the sail when the wind is up. All Lasers can reef the
sail without additional equipment
We'll show you how!
When do you race?
Most Sundays at 1:30 p.m. see racing
schedule.
How much does a Laser cost?
A Laser will cost anywhere from $1000 (used) to $4500. Due to
strict one-design rules, older boats are very competitive.
1. Current US Sailing Racing Rules
and 720 alternate penalty apply unless otherwise stated.
2. ¾ points of 1st, 2 pints for 2nd, e for 3rd, and so
on
lowest score wins.
3. Final scoring will consider best 60% of total Laser races completed
in a series (early summer and late summer). In other words, if
10 'A' fleet races are completed, the best 6 races will be scored
for each 'A' fleet contestant.
4. If a fleet member runs the Race Committee for Laser races,
he/she may use the better of (1) his/her average fleet position
from his other scored races in that series, or (2) a DNF.
5. All boats are scored together and split for 'A'' & 'B'
fleets. For example, Joe ('A' fleet) finishes 1st, Rex ('B') 2nd,
and Tina('A') 3rd, the Tina receives 3rd for that race.
6. DNS equals 2 more that the number of fleet racers in the most
attended race of a series. DNF will equal the number of finishers
for that race +1. DSQ will equal the number of starters +1.
7. Any member of the WLIC that races will be scored as a Laser
fleet member.
8. For final fleet position, the tie breaker goes to the person
with he most 1st,the most 2nd, and so on
until the tie is
broken.
9. Fleet members may count District 16 Laser regatta finishes
in the 'Early Summer' and 'Late Summer' series as follows:
Early Summer Series:
WLYC Laser Invitational- In this regatta, each race will count
as fleet races, with scoring determined by finishes of paid fleet
members, (i.e., the top WLYC finisher is scored as a 1st, the
next highest as 2nd, and so on...for each race). The Lake Quivira
Regatta can count as 1 race, with scoring determined by the final
position of paid fleet members.
Late Summer Series:
Laser District 16 Championships- Will count as fleet races (each
race) with scoring determined by the final position of paid fleet
members.
10. The race committee will attempt
to get at least 3 races sailed each race day. No more than 5 races
in one day will be scored ( the 1st five races will be scored).
11. A race is scored and will count toward final fleet standings
when 3 or more boats start a race.
12. If the 1st boat does not round the 1st mark within 30 minutes
after the start, or finish the race within 1 ½ hours, the
race is abandoned. Any boats not finished within ½ hour
after the lead boat will be given a DNF.
13. No race starting after 4:00 p.m. will be scored for fleet
standings.
14. A race must include 4 rounding marks or be over 1 mile in
length.
15. KING SERIES representation is determined in the following
manner:
a. The winner of the Early Summer Series and the winner of the
Late Summer Series.
b. If the same person has won both series, then the other representative
is the best 2nd place finisher as determined by head to head competition.
c. If still tied, the fleet tie-breaker method applies.
