Handicap Fleet

Fleet Captain: Augie Grasis III

The Handicap Fleet is open to all sailboats of any size that do not have an official fleet to race with. In order to score and be eligible for trophies in the Handicap Fleet, one must be a paid dues member of the Handicap Fleet. Please contact individuals listed above for details.

All boats in the fleet start together and their finishes are timed. Times are then adjusted based on handicap guidelines compiled by US Sailing, called the 'Portsmouth Yardstick'. This gives each boat type a performance handicap number that is used to equalize the boats.

Following are additional guidelines for Participation and handicapping races in the Handicap Fleet.

1. To receive points and qualify for fleet standings, fleet trophies and the King Series, your Handicap dues must be paid. A one race grace period is provided. Only boats without and official fleet will be scored
2. The latest Portsmouth Yardstick from US Sailing shall be used for handicapping.
3. D-PN Beaufort wind scale 2-3 Portsmouth number shall be used as the base for each boat. No other wind strength reporting or adjustments for wind strength will be made.
4. All boats shall be handicapped assuming class legal sail inventories and boat specifications with the following exceptions:
a. Boats sailing without spinnaker in a class where spinnaker is allowed can receive a favorable adjustment based on the Portsmouth standards.
b. Boats sailing without Genoa in a class where Genoa is allowed can receive a favorable adjustment based on the Portsmouth standards.
c. Boats with sail plans or any changes outside of class specifications will be subject to handicap adjustment.
5. No protests of handicaps based on performance will be heard if the boat is class legal.
6. Handicap adjustment requests will be heard and handicap adjustments made by a non-Weatherby Lake judge for non-class legal boats, or boats for which a Portsmouth number is not listed. If an adjustment is made it will affect the immediately preceding race and all following races only.
7. It will be each skipper's individual responsibility to inform Handicap Fleet Captain of the specifications and sail plan to base handicap of the boat. If the fleet captain is not informed, they will assume the boat is racing in maximum fleet legal form with no adjustments.
8. Modifications for No Spinnaker or No Genoa will only be allowed to change once per racing series. The fleet captain must be informed at least 24 hours in advance for any requested changes. For example, if a skipper starts a series sailing without a spinnaker and decides to race with a spinnaker, they may contact the captain 24 hours in advance to effect that change in handicap number. Then, they may not change the number again.

Handicap Fleet Scoring

1. The low score system is used: 1 point for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, and so on.
2. Final scoring will consider 60% of total races completed in that series rounded up to the nearest race. For example, if 10 races were sailed, the best 6 would be scored.
3. Skippers, not boats, will be scored. Skippers shall check in with RC before each race. To qualify as the skipper of a race, you must start the race and sail to the first mark.
4. Fleet dues must be paid after the skipper participates in 2 races. If fleet dues are not paid by this deadline, the racer will receive DNS until dues are paid.
5. There are no minimum number of races required for fleet scoring. All races not sailed will be scored with DNS.
6. A race is scored and will count toward fleet standing if at least 3 boats start the race.
7. Two races will be run on each scheduled race day. A 3rd race may be run as a makeup race if scheduled races have been missed. In no case shall this race start after 4:00 p.m.
8. DNS is number of fleet members at the end of the season plus one. DNF is number of finishers plus one. DSQ is number of starters plus one.
9. Tie breaker for final standings goes to the skipper that has beat the other more times in head to head competition in that series.
10. KING SERIES representation is determined as follows:
a. Winner of Early Series and Late Series
b. If the same person won both series, best 2nd place finisher as determined by head to head competition in both series.
c. If still tied, most 1st, 2nd, etc., will determine the winner.
d. All King Series qualifiers must have sailed the minimum number of races as determined by the WLYC Sailing Instructions.
