2010 Special Events

The following events, in chronological order, are scheduled for 2010.

  • 16 Januay 2010 (Saturday) 9:00-4:30pm - HYRA / US Sailing Management Workshop

    HYRA will be hosting a US Sailing Race Management workshop at KYC from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.  The seminar is designed for sailors who have some race committee experience; however, newcomers are also welcome. It will be held in the club's upper deck. Topics include:

    • Sailing instructions
    • Race Committe jobs and equipment
    • Setting the course
    • Starting system
    • Penalties
    • Finishing and scoring


    You will need a copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012.  An optional Club Race Officer certification test will be given at the conclusion of the seminar.  Registration will take place on the day of the event. The seminar fee is $30 for US SAILING members and for non-members who don't take the test; $60 for non-members who take the test.

  • 21 February 2010 (Sunday) - Hawaii Laser Association Race #3

    PHYC is the host for the 3rd regatta of the season for HLA, in Lasers at Rainbow Bay Marina.

  • 6 March 2010 (Saturday) - Greenhow Regatta

    PHYC is host for he HYRA Wahine's Greenhow Regatta. This is one of four regattas, which count towards the Wahine Skipper of Year. For the Greenhow, the Wahines will race Rhodes 19s at Rainbow Marina.    Race Results, Team Photos, and Race Photos

    The additional Wahine races will be held on:

    • Sunday, 23 May at PYC aboard Catalina 14's
    • Sunday, 1 August at KYC aboard Cal 20's
    • Sunday, 7 November at HYC aboard offshore racers.

  • Sunday 25 April 2010 - Race & Saling Clinic

    Come and join PHYC members as we improve our sailing and racing skills. Clinic will be from 1-4pm at Rainbow Bay Marina. We'll start with a short lecture on racing rules including starting line strategies and right-of-way rules for rounding the marks. We'll also discuss sail trim and how to rig and sail the other classes of dinghies - Lasers and 420's. Then we'll practice what we've preached by conducting a series of short races, followed by an after-race snack and discussion.

  • Saturday 8 May 2010 - Race & Saling Clinic

    Join us for the another racing clinic, starting at 9:30 am and lasting until 12:30 pm. We'll cover the same material as the 25 Apr clinic, so you can attend either or both events!

  • Friday 14 May through Monday 17 May 2010 - US Sailing Association Small Boat Instructor Course

    Designed to provide instructor qualification to sailors who already know how to sail, this course will be held for four consecutive days from 8am to 4pm at Hawaii Yacht Club (yes, you'll need to attend all four days). Cost will be $365, with a discount for early registration. There are several prerequisites, including CPR & First Aid qualification and US Sailing Association membership ($60). For PHYC members interested in becoming a sailing instructor, we anticipate that MWR will use the club as a pool of volunteers to assist with instructing on special occasions, and that instructors will be able to maintain their currency by teaching at these and other club events. Contact Dean Smith as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.

  • Saturday 19 June 2010 - Hawaii Youth Sailing Association #4

    PHYC hosted the 4th regatta of the season for HYSA, in Lasers and 420s at Rainbow Bay Marina.

  • 7 - 8 July 2010 (Wednesday & Thursday) - 2010 Sears Cup Qualifier

    PHYC hosts the Area H (Hawaii state) qualification rounds for the Sears Cup competition at Rainbow Bay Marina on the afternoon of Wednesday and Thursday, 7-8 July. The state's finest triple-handed, youth teams compete for the chance to represent Hawaii at the national level competition in San Diego.

    Congratulations to all the participants! The race was an outstanding display of sailing ability by our local sailing teams. This years competition was won by skipper Mitchell Woodrow and crew members Colby Curtis and Katherine Hughes, who represented Hawaii Yacht Club.   • 25 July - Full Moon at Lanikai, 7:11pm

    Interested in enjoying a summer moonrise at Lanikai beach? The PHYC banner will be hoisted above some lawn chairs on Sunday, July 25th, watching the full moon rise at 7:11 pm. No RSVP necessary, just BYOB and BYOP (bring your own pupus). PHYC will set up camp about 6:30 pm on the beach immediately makai of the intersection of Kaiolina Dr. & Mokulua Dr. in Lanikai.

  • 31 July - RIMPAC Regatta

    PHYC has been invited by the Navy Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) department to help co-host the biennial RIMPAC regatta. While MWR will handle much of the support, PHYC will assist in running the race committee and helping get the international teams registered and settled into their boats.

  • 5 August 2010 - Monthly meeting

    The August monthly meeting will be held in the classroom below Schooner's. The meeting will start at approximately 6:30 (after the Thursday afternoon sail). The featured topic will be the discussion of new PHYC website.

  • 28 August 2010 - Kaneohe Bay Sandbar Sail

    Join us as we rent the Capri 22' and Catalina 27' sailboats at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay for a morning sail on Kaneohe Bay. We'll head out in time to catch the low tide at 10am and so we'll have the chance to enjoy some "shore time". RSVPs are required to plan for the sailboat rentals and, if needed, access to the Marine base. For more details, Email Dean

  • 2 September 2010 - Monthly meeting

    The Spetember monthly meeting will be held in the classroom below Schooner's. The meeting will start at approximately 6:15 (after the Thursday afternoon sail). The featured topic will be a presentation by Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on the new MWR organization and plans for the future.

  • 11 September 2010 - Sailing Clinic

    We'll spend the morning reviewing Man Overboard drills and other emergencies (lost tiller, broken shroud, running aground, etc.). Just the thing for all those "what if" situations.

  • 12 September 2010 - Chili Cookoff

    Local yacht clubs will compete in the second annual, Iroqouis Lagoon Memorial Chili Cook Off, hosted by Pacific Yacht Club. Calling all you PHYC members with good chili recipes or wanna-be chili cooks!

  • 7 October 2010 - Monthly meeting

    The October monthly meeting will be held in the classroom below Schooner's. The meeting will start at approximately 6:00 (after the Thursday afternoon sail). The featured topic will be final planning for our Sail & Learn cruise.

  • 11 October 2010 (Discoverer's Day) - Kaneohe Bay Sandbar Sail

    On Monday, October 11th join us for another Kaneohe Bay sandbar sail in the afternoon. We'll take a couple Catalina 22' sailboats out on the bay and enjoy a bit of our own "discovery". Meet at Kaneohe Bay Marine Base Marina at 1230. If you need base access, Email Dean and he will meet you at the visitor station (H-3 entrance to the base) at 12:15. Remember to bring some pupu's & sun screen!

  • 16-17 October 2010 - Lipton One Design Challenge

    On October 16-17, PHYC will enter a team in the annual Lipton One Design Challenge at Kaneohe Yacht Club. Dean, Ann Ford and Kate Schalk will compete with local yacht clubs. Our thanks to Mike Rothwell for allowing us to use his Cal 20 sailboat "Hogwash." May she sail fast! Come support the PHYC team!

  • 23 October 2010 - Wine Tasting

    On Saturday October 23rd, join us for another PHYC wine tasting. We'll pick another "vintage" to have made and ready to bottle in time for the holidays (bottling in mid-December) complete with PHYC commemorative label - perfect for holiday gifts! We'll do dinner at 5 pm, with tasting at Wine The Experience at 6:30 Please RSVP for either or both of these, as space is limited.

  • 4 November 2010 - Meeting & Election of 2011 PHYC Board

    The November meeting will be held in the classroom below Schooner's, starting at approximately 6:00 (after the Thursday afternoon sail). Featured topic will be the election of the 2011 PHYC Board - Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodores for Sail and Power, Treasurer, Secretary and Director. If you're interested in running, please contact any member of the 2010 Board for more information on the post you're interested in and the duties and responsibilities of it.

  • Saturday 6 November 2010 - Seafest at Waikiki Yacht Club

    WYC is hosting this year's fund raiser for the the Hawaii Sailing Foundation. PHYC will run a dunk tank and help out at this annual event. Please plan on showing up to help around 10 or 11 a.m., with the event lasting from 12-4 pm.

  • 20 November 2010 - Sailing Clinic

    We will have a sailing clinic from 9-11am on Saturday November 20. With luck, it will be aboard the new Catalina 18's! We'll see how to "tweak" the sail and and maybe how well the new fleet can compete in a couple of practice races!

  • 21 November - Full Moon at Lanikai, 5:30pm

  • 8 December 2010 - Wine Bottling

    On Wednesday December 8, join us for bottling of our 2010 vintage PHYC Cabernet at The Wine Experience, 5 - 7pm. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

  • 9 December 2010 - Holiday Party

    Join the crew of PHYC for our yearly holiday party in the Ohana Hale at Rainbow Bay on Thursday 9 December (Yes, this IS a delay from our normal the first Thursday of the month to the second Thursday). Pot luck dinner, with a review of the year's events, installation of new officers, and presentation of 2010 awards. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
