November 2011
From the Rear Commodore - Dave DeMarco
As my first order of business and on behalf of the Flag Officers and the Trustees, I would like to thank everyone who supported the Fall work day 2011. Nearly 40 members came out and they include (apologize in advance if I missed anyone): Bud Eitner, Dave Miller, John Keating, Sr., John Keating, Jr., Stan Cwiklinski, “Scuba” Steve Donohue, Dick Ford, Jack and Martha Fisher, George Albaugh, Tim Jefferson, Alex Deitz, Ken and Beth Deitz, Sean Ford, Joe Courter, John Bilotta, Marc Siedenberg, John Goetz, Kevin Kearns, Joanne Kearns, Doug Corbett, Hugh Braithwaite, Norb Chehak, Jim Burns, Paul Murray, Moss Jackson, Maria Miller, Joe Tedeschi, Fred Dohn, Harry Chaikin, Ed O’Connor, John Rozsa, Dennis Faherty.
Those that are storing their boat(s) at BYC for the winter please be sure to remind Norb Chehak so he can collect the appropriate fees. norbsails@aol.com
A look ahead:
The 2012 sailing season will be here before we know it and I intend to build on the success of last summer. I will continue to focus on bridging the gap between “ "Learn to Sail” and “Travel Team” with weekly recognition to those who are ready to move into “Club Level Racing”. Events will be held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night, with weekly recognition of those participants learning to race. Sailors are encouraged to take advantage of the knowledge and experience of the Travel Team sailors who will be mentoring them in Club Racing.
In 2012 we will continue to support other water sports in addition to sailing. Many of our members enjoy such activities as kayaking, fishing, swimming and surfing. This summer I will continue to organize, promote and recognize these activities while bringing more value to the membership of BYC.
Although BYC does provide club boats, I highly encourage parents to look into the option of buying an opti or laser (radial, 4.7 or full rig options) for their sailors. Having your own boat provides a much greater opportunity to learn, and expand into club racing.
Sailing Instructors:
Most of the
2011 sailing instructors have expressed interest in returning for 2012. If
anyone else is interested please be sure to contact me. Those who have not
completed the US Sailing Level One Instructor course please be sure to sign up
ASAP. BYC will reimburse your course fees. Level 2 is also available and is
recommended for those interested in coaching.
http://training.ussailing.org/Teaching.htm. Avalon Yacht Club will be
holding US Sailing Instructor Certification week of June 18th. If there is
enough interest the level 2 course will be included during the same week 2012.
Both certifications should be posted on the web site above by January 2012.
I would prefer and push each of you to take the course over the winter months so
your not waiting to the last minute, but I understand school and other
sports/activities take precedent. Please keep me informed.
Sailing Committee:
I am taking names and offering praises for those interested in being part of the Sailing Committee. Please contact me if interested. Thank you Debbie Carchidi for being the first to officially volunteer your services.
