Area D
US Match Racing Championship
2006 Semi Finals

For the

Joe James Cup

The Area D Semifinals for the US Match Racing Championship was  held August 19th and 20th in Charleston, SC at the College of Charleston Sailing Center. Hosted by Hobcaw Yacht Club, entrants included teams from Wilmington NC, Tampa FL and New Orleans, LA representing three of the four RSA's in Area D. One winner was determined to represent area D at the USMRC Finals to be sailed in October at Ft. Worth Boat Club. A double round robin was completed Saturday in a fresh breeze that eventually died off to barely pace the afternoon flood tide. Racing resumed Sunday with a final round robin sailed in a welcomed fresh sea breeze that was adequate to overcome another strong ebb tide

After two days of sailing, the event was decided by a tie breaker between the GYA team of Devon Sweeney from Southern Yacht Club and the FSA  team skippered by Tom  Barry of Davis Island Yacht Club. Devon won their final match, which followed a rare dead heat finish in their rematch of the double Round Robin of the first day's racing. Tom Barry defeated Devon in their first match which left their scores tied at 7 1/2 points each. Applying the Appendix C 11.1 (b)tiebreaker resulted in the victory for Devon, since he won the final match between the two skippers.
Pictured are the members of the winning crew, Deanna Van Diver and Phil Bylsma with their skipper Devon Sweeney  holding the Joe James Trophy. They will return with this trophy to New Orleans and will look to defend their win next year. Devon and his crew will be representing Area D at the Nationals this fall.
