The United State Match Racing Championship

For the Prince of Wales Bowl

2003

Final Report:       (Article and pictures by Steve Wrigley)

Nathan Hollerbach with crew Matt Shirilla and Mike Hoey are seen here with Bayview Yacht Club Commodore Ted Everingham ( left ) and Prince of Wales Chairman Kirk Brown ( right ) as they are presented with US SAILING’s Prince of Wales Bowl for winning  the US SAILING’S United States Match Racing Championship.

Bayview Yacht Club hosted 10 teams from around the country who competed for top honors, racing on the Detroit River in front of BYC’s waterfront location.

This year’s racing was accented with some exciting penalty turns at the finish line, great sailing handling and sailors climbing masts while racing to retrieve spinnaker halyards.

Six teams went to the single round robin in the second stage to determine the finalists and the petit finalists.  Nathan Hollerbach took on David Rosow Jr ( crew Richard Gresham and Erik Goethert  ) out of the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport CT, in the finals.  David and his crew earn the 2nd spot.

Benz Faget ( crew David Bolyard and Chris Wientjes ) from the New Orleans Yacht Club in New Orleans LA competed against Jim Kelly ( crew Doug McClean and Steve Flam )  sailing out of Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club  San Pedro CA.  The Faget crew won the petits and finished 3rd overall.  Jim Kelly and crew were award the fourth spot.

Congratulations to all of the sailors in this year’s Prince of Wales Bowl and to the superb Race Committee lead by Marsha Everingham and her Bayview Yacht Club team.  An international umpire crew lead by “Tuna” ( Arthur Wullschleger ) was on hand for the four competitive sailing days which offered warm temperatures, fair winds and fine match racing.
